Simba 90

New Member
Hi guys, I just joined up today and left a little hello mssg in the appropriate noob section of landyzone. I think that as a newcomer, we're all entitled to one stupid post before we man up and actually have to pretend we know stuff about landys, so here's mine (please don't beat me up) :)

1) What the hell is diff lock. I know it's to be used for traction, climbing steep slopes and whatever but at the moment it's just the magic stick that gets me across obstacles... I have no idea how or why!

2) My first ever landy (ex RAF 90 2.5 N/A) looks pretty but there's something missing.... MUD! I haven't had a chance to get him out and totally caked yet and I'm still very unsure of his potential/reliability. Can I take a 20+ year old 2.5 N/A landy out to a 4x4 quarry or will it just die at the first hurdle, in the wake of all the v8's, 200/300 Tdi's and TD5's?

3) (Ok this one's bound to outrage a few of you so I'm hiding in my locked 90 when I ask this) I'm thinking of the 200 Tdi engine upgrade (from my 2.5 N/A), but why is the 200 Tdi favoured above 300, Td5 or even a v8? What would I get from doing such an upgrade - better fuel consumption, more power?

Ok I think I'll leave it at that before you ban me :p Sorry for the poorly educated, city-boy landy questions... I hope you didn't hit your faces too hard

Thanks again,

Ben

land rovers have three diffs one each axle one in transfer box ,they allow wheel to do different speeds to go round corners center diff allows axles to do different speeds for same reason with out difflock you can stand still if one wheel spins with diff lock you would need a wheel on each axle to spin to stand still .200 disco engine is cheapest ,and most straight forward conversion defender 200tdis would be easier but you cant find them,i prefer to do 300 and change gearbox tunnels etc to make fit as standard 300tdi vehicle but more work

Of course your mini had a diff - unless you are talking about what you were wearing. Like most front wheel drive cars, the diff is built into the gearbox.

All front wheel and rear wheel drive cars have diffs aswell. it allows the wheels to turn at DIFFerent speeds round corners aiding smooth ride and preventing harsh tyre wear.

Let's all point and laugh at the city-boy n00b... But in my defence I did clearly state that "I'm more than likely to confuse an engine for a windscreen wiper" in my introduction post :p Thanks for the info/friendly banter guys. Anyone else fancy jumping in here? (with useful information or pointless, yet mildly amusing insults) Feel free.....

P.s. Oxides stay away from my mini-diff pant draw :D

Do the conversion, well worth the money...more mpg and more horses.

An N/A will def be fine off road as its not about speed...

Welcome.

(See Si, I didn't use the word dick once..and he's from Manchester!!)

never mind the diff argument chaps

firstly:welcome2::welcome2::welcome2: to loonyzone

now i see yer in manchester so im guessing at north manchester am i right

and you mentioned pay and play quarry are you thinking cowm quarry in whitworth if so pm me and ill tell yer the inns and outs of that site

now bout the conversion the 200 dti conversion is more popular to the 300 on 3 points

1.... the 200 dti is a cheaper engine to aquire than the 300
2 ....the 200 dti is easier to obtain than the 300
3..... the 200 dti is an easier conversion to do due to the position of the turbo as opposed to the 300 ;);)

South Manchester ;) I don't know, I've not been to any pay n' plays yet but I really want to see what's about. If anyone fancies showing a n00b some of the childrens play areas sometime, I'd be well up for that! Hopefully I'll be as retarde..... incredibly knowledgeable as the real boffins on here some day :D

It seems to me that the 200 Tdi conversion's easier and cheaper to do than the 300. But performance wise, is it inferior? If I have the coin and bollocks to try a 300 conversion (or get someone else to do it, once I've mounted the new engine on the roof for some unexplainable reason :p), is it worth doing that instead?

what part of south manc are yer matey theres a few of us on here live round this way ( wythenshawe meself )

i dont think it makes much diference between the 200 or the 300 apart from a few horses and a load of wiring :D

Storm, you quite clearly just want an sh*t-funny review on here in a couple of weeks with me explaining how I accidentally fixed my fridge-freezer and not a 200 Tdi into my beautiful 90!

I swear if I attempt it, I'll mess everything up. Turn the heater on and I'll get an injection of diesel in my face or something. Hmmm, might be a bit of an ambitious project to start off with. Think I'll have to leave that one until a bit later (which is a shame considering how much my N/A drinks at the moment).

a few things fella, on road, the faster you go above 50 the more it'll drink

off road the faster you go over stuff the more you break

on road the slower you go the more you wish you had a eurobox

off road the slower you go, well you'll join the freelanders in the stuck pile

so off road if you go as slow as possilbe but as fast as necessary you'll do ok,

welcome ya northern get  from a soft southerner :D:nopics:

haha thanks, every little bit of n00bish information helps... even if it is from a southerner ;)

:welcome2: I'd keep it standard until you get the hang of offroading, you'll be suprised what a Landy can do even in standard form.
If your Landy is in good shape it won't matter how old (or young in your case :p) it is, mines 45 years old and I still offroad it!

Only gentle **** taking, honest! Dunno about the engine but you see much older vehicles than yours out playing. Difflock? you've got three differentials, one in each axle and one in the gearbox. The axle diffs allow the wheels to turn at different rates (like when cornering) and the centre diff lets the front wheels turn at different rates to the rear wheels. Without this the whole transmission system can "wind up" and lock, especially on tarmac. If one wheel starts to spin the other three will be stationary, not good in a four wheel drive vehicle. Locking the centre diff offroad means that two wheels have to spin before you lose drive but the loose surface will allow enough wheel slippage to prevent wind up.
For even better off road grip you can fit diff lockers to the axle diffs as well.
And, frankly, I don't care if you wear women's clothes. We've all done it.
Haven't we?

I'd love to agree with Oxides and to be fair for the most part I do...............................................

Right upto the wearing of women's clothes anyway :D :D :D

yes deffo leave everthing as it is until you've done some off roading then yhou'll know if you want to do the conversion, you'll find out what you can do with diff lock(and what you can do without it, and it might surprise you) but if you want to get into mud you must have some manly tyres, it'll be the best investment you will makw and it WILL make all the difference. The main thing to remember about diff lock is, if you think you are going to loose traction (wheel spin) put the diff lock in first, when you reach firmer ground take it out of diff lock. keep reading the road conditions and change the gearing to suit.

And I thought everyone got exiled TO Stockport! :p

Thanks for that, I'll leave things as they are for now and stick to the simple stuff (A bars, security locks and aesthetics). I'll do a bit of work on the interior and try and get a radio/speakers put in along with a new dash. I'll have a serious think about chassis protection and try and find out where I can get that done. Manly wheels and the 200 Tdi upgrade can wait until later on :) Keep an eye out for SIMBA at the Convoy for Heroes, should be there :D

Thanks for all the help guys!
