Hello,

My son and I, both amateurs, have posted before about our non-starting 1997 Freelander L-series 2.0 diesel. Thanks to those who helped before as we have made good progress with your advice.

It is still not going quite yet.

In summary: it had been left in a damp garage 5 years.

It has a brand new battery and the starter motor cranks well, but it won't start the engine (unless using Easy Start spray when it turns over albeit very clunkily).

New air filter, oil change and new oil filter. Of note, there was a litre more old oil that came out than the handbook's stated capacity.

No engine fault codes on the dash, though we note that there is no solenoid pre-heating light on pre-ignition. I have been unable to source an OBD 1 code reader.

We have new fuel, a new fuel filter, it is pump primed and fuel is ejected from the fuel pump when turning over (we don't want to admit to you how we know this). The four fuel injector pipes are patent having taken them off. The fuel pump relay is fine.

So the next step is fuel injectors. But we approach this with trepidation as we have never seen a fuel injector in real life, have no specialist removal tools and would not know how to clean/service them. There do not seem to be an abundance of them to buy on eBay, especially the wired number 1 injector + we have limited funds. We have not been able to find anything helpful in other threads or on You Tube.

My Qs are therefore:

1) is there anything else besides removing the fuel injectors which might make it start?
2) if they need to come out how do we approach this?

Have you tried the camshaft position sensor?
This can prevent firing.

You really need a code reader - or ideally a diag tool that can read the live data. Or someone who has one 😉

I'm half way between Wakefield and Barnsley, village called Notton.

The devices I've seen on line seem to promise to read everything but on closer inspection they don't.

I'll check out the camshaft position sensor.

The PScan is the best tool for the F1 - it’s developed by Philip, who is on here, and can connect to most of the emu’s. Far better than the ‘generic’ ones.
A lot of us use it.



If you look on YouTube, you can back-probe the camshaft sensor to test it on the signal line. If you need a new one, don’t get a cheap ‘copy’. Ask me how I know!
