Well I went to start my 300 tdi disco today, never used it for 4 days ! open the doors via the remote, put the key in & after the glow plug light went out, Nothing ! It did not attemt to turn over, loads ov life in the battery & the imobilizer light was out ! looks like the spider unit has given up, tried a few times today, just the same, dashboard will be coming out tomorrow, any advice welcome ?

if its the spyder unit gone south it will cost approx £7ish from the main dealers to buy the bypass plug and a bit of hassle taking the dash off

Im planning stipping the dash tomorrow & opening up the spider unit to repair the dry joints or damaged tracks, do you know what the dealer part works, via the bypass ?

Ive got exactly the same problem with my 94 auto.Think it might be the inhibiter switch but priced one at Land ranger, £87 + vat  so I want to rule out all possibilities before I go down that road.Ive checked and cleaned the battery earth and the starter /body earth. Not checked the starter end yet. When you turn the key with headlights on do they go dim ? If so current is reaching starter. If they stay bright [like mine] and no click its a fault in the circuit or solenoid.Going out tommorow for another go at it..........I may be some time :(

Hi, lights stay bright, mine is the manual version, im led to beleive they are very prone to the spider box faults, is yours a 200 or 300 ?

Hello Vizlauk,Mines a 300.Ive had this problem for a couple of weeks but still not sorted it.In the past Ive had a problem with the engine failing to start after being turned off for a few minutes following a long journey .It would then start after waiting for a few more minutes. Now it wont start at all ,but lights are on just like yours.Im thinking its the spider unit now ?How much are they ? is it a straight swap?

Apparently removal of the centre dash panel will give you access to the spider unit.So no need to remove whole dash.

Stripped the dash this morning & the spider unit has been bypassed, with a land rover harness, Im now thinking it may be the starter relay ? any ideas where it is located ??

We had a few problems like this. It seems (dunno how true it is, I "was told") that the plipper needs to be close to the starter switch. I'd changed keyrings, and went from one where the key and plipper were together and therefore close to the starter switch, to one with the plipper on a short chain so it hung below the fuse box top lid (to stop the annoying tapping on the original keyring).

Might be worth checking ... ;)

Thanks but the immbolizer light is going out, I can start the disco via putting a live direct to the starter, so the fault is between the switch / relay & starter ! I need to find the starter reley.

Have you checked the ignition feed at the starter is turning live with the key in the 'start' position? It could just be a dirty/corroded connection. Try giving the feed wire a wiggle.

It's now up & running again, after stripping out the centre dash, to find the spider has already been by-passed, then stripping both kick plates of & checking all the wiring & relays, still did not find the problem !
But it's now starting & stopping via the key ( for now !).
