Morning all,

So my 90 was crashed into Sunday and unfortunately it looks like a write off :mad:. I have been looking at new ones to buy and I have found a very nice, very low mileage 300tdi 90 with galvanised chasis and a sh*t load of money spent on it. I figure i may as well go for something good since I will probably drive it for most of my life :)

I would probably RTV it once or twice a month, but as I only had my first one 2 days before someone wrote it off I never got a chance to give it a go and see how 'non damaging' they really are! So my question is this, would you RTV a expensive shiny new 90 or would you just get a not so nice, higher mileage etc one that you don't really care about battering a bit off road?

I'd get the best I could afford at the time and not care anyway .. 's what I did with me Disco and that's still looking OK ish after about 11/12 years ownership, with just a few bumps and scratches .. ;)

There are NO non-damaging RTV's .. they're only non-damaging if you always get it right, feck up and they can be very damaging .. ;)

I think that sounds like a solid plan, I will just have to try not to f*ck up too badly when I am RTVing :D
 
I got the best I could afford and while I do take it off the road I do also clean it and chuck a quick coat of wax on. The only time I get the machine out is when the scratch changes colour. Well maintained there's no reason an all purpose vehicle can't be used off road and still look at place parked in an office car park.

Heh, you know it makes sense .. ;)

Might be an idea to put your location in UserCP .. you might get help from close at hand too, if you need it!
 
If u don't want to damage to the land rover you could do tryos which r lot easier and the young ones can join in from 13 if you can find a club
 
how was yours a write off ? was the entire chassis twisted ?

Is this your company telling you or is this the others company ? They cant write it off just like that

The insurance company haven't had a look at it yet, I wish they would hurry up and arrange something already :mad:

But we got it up on a ramp to take a look, the axle is bent and the chasis is twisted, some other rod things are bent but I cant remember what they are called :eek: also rear crossmember is bent, wheel arch and the panel around it are wrecked and would need replacing and the diff is weaping oil.. To be honest I kind of hope it's a write off now, I could spend a load of money fixing it up but who knows what kind of damage the shock from the crash might have done to the rest of the car, like the gear box and engine.. It could never drive properly again.

I will probably buy it back just for the spares anyway.

The tyro's I have seen look a bit boring though! I need something in between an RTV and a tyro.. Maybe green laning is the way forward :)
 
Ahhh but you could make them pay for all the repairs ;) its not your job to foot the cost, the old ****s admitted it was his fault so its his insurance company that should be paying for it.

New chassis fitted £1700 I think, decent axles £80 a pair, new trailing arms £80 I think, second hand body panel £40, respray £700

Make them pay! :D


Gearbox and engine I bet will be fine ;)
 
Cartoon head we're at Weston Underwood on the 20th January RTV CCV and Tyro (Tyro non damaging) but could be boring for guys used to more agressive terrain.

Plenty of people do rtv shiny motors. they just stop before they get into trouble. That comes with experience and those peope are happy to take the penalty. Me I'd be the one edging close to that tree as I may just get away with it. Now I've ended up building a CCV motor and keep my wreck of a 90 for towing/greenlanes/camping. Its still got 37 inch tyres and a rear locker but for me now its just my road motor.

I may pop down for a look but I doubt I will be in a landy by then :(

Out of interest what is the difference between anglian rovers owners club and anglian land rover club? Or are they the same people? I did a few RTV's and a CCV about 5 years ago and it was definitely with anglian but I am not sure which one. I have also joined up with chiltern vale too.

Yeah I think I will let them write it off and then buy it back and do it up, I have been to look at a few other 90's to buy but even for double the money of mine I can't find anything I like as much. Also I could use this opportunity to get a galvanised chassis :D

Anglian rover owners are no longer affiliated to the alrc so you can't compete in the nationals under our membership, it also means the club allow you to trial any type of 4x4 provided it passes scrutineering for its class type
 
I too thought rover owners clubs are too anal and played with the awdc for a few years. It became silly money and the oat of racing is mahoosive up against 300k machines vs the 300k machines.

I couldn't compete even trailing and went to a rover club it's far cheaper and regs more strict but its all good I had to accept that these are the rules and they're not too bad really

I like the friendliness and I'm not bankrupt after each event
