I finally got my Discovery running and I brought it for a spin and noticed a pretty bad whining noise when turning the wheel, I presume its something to do with the power steering pump, I had a look at the power steering reservoir and it is the fluid was very bubbly and just touching the bottom of the dipstick. Beneath the reservoir it seems to be leaking very badly (All the pipes are covered) and ideas? Is this a common or well known issue?

Any help would be great

Here are some Pics-

From your pics looks like it's coming out the pass the filler cap probably due to foaming. clean off all the fluid so you can identify where the leak is coming from. top up and try bleeding the steering box there's a bleed nipple on the top near where the pipes fit into it.

Thanks Mr Glee, what causes the foaming, is it air getting in somewhere? You do to happen to know what particular powersteering fluid it takes?

Foaming will be air entrainment - which is probably a seal gone somewhere - or insufficient fluid - which, judged off your pic of the reservoir is rather low - you are missing the filter and level indicators from same ...

Have a look in RAVE for info on the PS system - it's a simple low pressure system that doesn't usually give too much trouble .... but seals do go :( .... have you checked the pump and the box itself for leaks?

Hey Disco1BFG, I don't suppose dexron II would do the job? Its just I have a few litres of it in the shed from a previous Mercedes project!!20190508_231032.jpg

Hey All,
Finally got around to looking at the power steering!!

I took the cap off and started the engine and topped up the reservoir and then turned then steering wheel full lock back and forth a few times then added abit more and did the same again and hey presto the sound is gone!! I think there may be a small leak somewhere so I will keep my eye on it but thankfully that seems to have sorted it.

Thanks for all your help!! Now onto the next issue........ welding
