hi guys
I have a gearbox that is making an awful racket ,especially in 3,4,5th gear, there's also a bad oil leak from gearbox which seems to be leaking down and onto the transfer box?
The truck was recently in garage for new bearings and seals on transfer box and new u/j s and since then it's making a terrible noise when driving in 3,4,5th and leaking gearbox oil badly
Any ideas ?
It's sounding like a really loud tappety type noise but it's only noticeable in 3,4,5 gear? Noise stops when clutch is pressed down

It was like it as soon as I picked it up from the garage, really disappointed, the garage aren't admiting any responsibility for it,I've taken it back to them twice now, they say it's nothing that they have done but it must be,it sounds like a tank in 3rd4th n5th

Anybody?
I'm at a loss to know what to do for the best,is it gearbox out for new seals bearings ect or could it be that they've just not done the job right when they had transfer box out ?

Can anybody offer any advice on this please before I have to pay again for a garage to remove gearbox to investigate what might have happened,I can't really drive the truck til it's sorted as it's leaking so much gearbox oil and is so noisy

I don't think that anyone can advise without taking a look and a short drive.

While there's little doubt that your noises have started since the work was done, can you be certain that the oil leak wasn't there before?

Regardless of that latter point, I think that you're going to have to face up to the garage and tell them that it is their fault and that they have a choice. Fix it or you'll take it elsewhere for an engineer's report and repair, the cost of which they will be liable for. Mention trading standards too.

I've had it back to the garage and told them it's something they've done cos it wasn't leaking anywhere near what it's like now ,they say they've only had transfer box off and fixed leak on that, gearbox is nothing to do with them but what I was asking is could they have damaged anything in gearbox when removing/replacing transfer box?
It's so noisy now it's unbearable to drive it.

Anything's possible, but no, you'd have to be pretty dense to damage the gearbox when removing the transfer box.

From what you've written though, it isn't definitely the gearbox making the noise.

The oil leak is unproven. Where, exactly, is it coming from?

You need to decide what you want to achieve.

If you want it fixed, take it to someone who can fix it - a decent place that knows LRs. James Martin (above) isn't far from you.

If you want if fixed and you want the costs covered you have a choice. Make Garage A fix it. You may have told them it's the gearbox, so you need to tell them that you don't know what it is, but it happened as a result of their work and they must fix it. Or take it to Garage B and sue A for the cost. For each of these two some confrontation is unavoidable.

if they have had the transfer box out they may have put the bolts in wrong i think one is shorter so has not to hit fifth gear and they may have caught the seal putting box back in but James will know for def pm him

It's definitely gearbox oil that's leaking and it seems to be coming down from the top of where gearbox meets transfer box.
The garage said it's probably just because the seals on gearbox have been disturbed when transfer box was removed.if that's the case then it's fine,I accept that and understand gearbox needs to be out and new seals.what Concerns me is the noise it's now making in 3rd4th and 5th gear. If they have put a bolt in wrong place or damaged something then I deffinately won't let them take out gearbox and fit new seals,I will take it elsewhere.i have used the garage for years with no other problems at all.
