Hello all , my 2002 1.8l freelander is noisy on the motorway , it doesnt rattle or scrape or bump or bang , however its loud , its like a loud echo , difficult to explain , sometimes if the children open a rear window in our car whilst at speed it makes almost a flapping noise as the wind hits the side of the window , its a bit like that any ideas.windows were closed by the way !

Check all bits of plastic trim plus mud guards.under the car check the plastic bits that are between the sump guard and wheel arch (front of front wheels) also check wheel arch liners.
Give everything a good pull and tug, if it's only happening at high speed the part will probably look ok.

You don’t have one of them flags attached from the World Cup still?

If you open a rear window only on most cars they will create a drumming sound of air.

Have yer got a roof rack fitted? Is it a soft back 3 door or the 5 door?

Pretty much all cars do the low frequency vibration thing if a rear window only is open. Basically you're turning the car into a very low frequency organ pipe. Opening a front window a small amount at the same time will cure that horrible low frequency vibration.

As for general noise, yes they can be noisy, but it's very dependent on tyres and general condition of the running gear.
My TD4 isn't as quiet as my old V6, but then it's a rattling diesel. Swapping from 17" AT tyres to 18" road tyres makes a huge difference to my vehicle noise though.

Ive also got a series 3 , so im used to not being able to hear passengers!! Thanks for answers, Ill check all suggestions, I have a related query , although its only 2 weeks into new Mot and brakes seem even and fine could brakes create a noise like this? Its not only when braking though and theyre not binding . its looks to me as even though similar thickness one side has been changed and the others a bit rusty around the edges and creating a bit of brake dust

A new set of pads is only £25 (Delphi's) so put a new set on anyway if your unsure.
As a thought, as @Nodge68 suggested the tyres, there isn't a small balloon or chunk out of one of them?
Mike

No ive checked tyres all good , ive bought some pads today in one of Eurocarparts any excuse to have a sale sales (My favourite was their Royal wedding weekend sale!) reduced to £12 from £34!, if they ever close down ill have to sell the car , ill give it a go later , Thanks again .
