Hi all, I've got an 03 TD4 auto. When I bought it a year ago the prop had been removed to 'improve fuel economy', I took that with a pinch of salt and suspected knackered carriers. I wasn't too bothered so I bought it anyway. It's always run like a dream but I thought I'd fit the prop what with winter being just around the corner. As I suspected it was a tad noisy so I took it off again after a couple of days. The thing is now tho that I have a 'ticking' noise when I set off, it gets gradually faster as I accelerate. When I get to 30 or so it can no longer be heard. After a bit of reading I'm learning towards a knackered ird. I'm gonna take it out and fit a blanking plate.
Firstly, does my diagnosis sound about right ?
Secondly, what would have caused it to become noisy when it was ok before I fitted prop ?

well I think some one removed the prop shaft in the first place because there was a problem either with the diff or the ird and not as some say on fleabay for better fuel consumption.
 
Did the prop you fitted come with it, or did you buy it separately as a good one?
I don't think a good VCU can cause any damage but I'm prepared to be corrected (standard procedure).

Yes, the prop came with the car. It was running fine before I fitted the prop, no noises or anything.
 
Deffo suspect VCU then. The IRD may have been on the way out as a result, maybe refitting just pushed it that bit further.
You probably knew that already though. :nothingtoadd:

If you mean the ticking noise, maybe - if you're lucky!
But if you're going to take it apart anyway, might as well have a look to see what the damage is - maybe it's just as easily repairable without castrating your hippo!
