I have a 2001 ES Freelander. I was wondering if anyone can help me with the following problems I've encountered.

Firstly there is a new engine noise, it sounds like a rocker, or valve tapping. I happens at idle, cold or hot, and through most engine speeds. I tried an engine flush with fnigers crossed, but no luck. It is coming from the rear bank, and around the head. Any ideas?

The second problem is it won't start intermitently. With my auto elec experience I think it is immobilizer, as the alarm will sound sometimes. I tried using the spare key, which worked for a while, now nothing works. I was stuck a few times on the beach, and on a barge with 30 cars behind me. I don't wont to go to Landy just yet, if anyone has any suggestions I would be very happy.

why would you want it to start intermitently?? i think i'd want it to start all the time.

v6 or 4-cyl or diesel?

i had a similar problem with my v6 not starting over the last few weeks in the heat of brisbane and the sunshine coast....

took it into a garage and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. fortunately when i went to pick it up, it wouldn't start. they plugged in their monitor and found that the cam sensor was playing up. NOT that the sensor was detecting something wrong, but that the sensor itself was faulty, therefore immobilising the engine.

i believe, once the engine had cooled down a bit, the sensor would start working again, and clear any errors that had been recorded.

anyway, sensor replaced and all working fine again.

good luck - hope it is as simple for you to sort.

Thanks for that, I just got the car back from land rover. Who also replaced the cam sensor. :)

The rattle although is apparently the actuator on the butterfly valves, (on inlet manifold). They quoted $2300 to replace it. Not funny.

So I hope someone out there knows an alternative to replacing the whole inlet mainfold.

cheers,
Ben

glad they sorted it.

$2300 not funny at all. have a search on inlet manifold in these forums - a recent post referred to an apparently cheap alternative (not LR part, but maybe Holden(Vauhall/GenMotors) equivalent...

cheers
