Ok folks, did a decent run in the disco today and loved every second but there were two noises standing out that may be perfectly normal...or may be something to get checked so here's the question: "normal or not"

1: Howling on smooth roads under acceleration/high speed.

The howling drops when you slow down or just ease off the accelerator, for all I know it could be the turbo or a normal noise from the 4x4 system...

2: grinding noise when steering is on full lock.

This one is more of a worry as it's a bit of an unnerving sound for it to make but it only does it while the steering is on full lock.

info: 300tdi auto, tyres are nothing special just heavy tread roadies.

Sorry if this seems stupid but I figure better to ask the seasoned veterans than have something fall off on a trip to devon lol

Turbo should sound like a whistle. My guess is tyres.

Re the grinding, what size tyres? Are they catching the arches?

Not sure on the specifics of the tyres but there is no obvious signs of this happening in the arches (was checking the turrets more thoroughly today) The noise does have more of a metallic ring to it but I shall investigate further (checking tyres for wear in those spots and so on).

Cheers buddy :)

Would the tyre noise be more noticeable at lower pressure? I checked the tyres when we got home as hadn't thought to before that howling and three of them were at least 10psi down.

Er, yes...and you'd probably get huge wobble over 50mph and every time you hit a stone lol.

Check the size...235/70's or 235/85 or what??

Will check tomorrow, I know where the info is it's just not something I had thought to look at as they are "just tyres" rather than some tasty mud-pluggers hehe

I have noticed over the years in different cars they all make noisewhen on full lock.
Always put this down to the pump, turning back a small bit always stopped the noise.
Cannot help abou t. the tyres.

Have you checked the tyres are not rubbing on the radius arms? A shiny or rubbed looking bit would be the give away.

Thanks for that, some more things to check :)
She's taken it out for the moment and I forgot to check
the tyre size earlier but I'll give it all a poke tomorrow.
Got a friend over during the day so we can have two sets of eyes on it.
