We were out lastnight doing some of the more challenging lanes round here, I have used diff locks few times now and never had a problem or noises but last night it made quite a nasty grinding type sound but only when struggling for grip when I was trying to get up and over a large patch of lumps rutts etc all up a steep hill, so before I pull all the transmission out is there and thing I should be checking for first??
Any help is much appreciated
Cheers
Matt

you could check the oils for cotamination/debris ,remove t/box sump and check condition of bearings (movement freeplay in gears)

Was this the lane in Hindhead that we cam down on Sunday?

A low pitched vibration, (I have one in 5th) under heavy load could be clutch release bearing.

You could put the diff in Lo, and the gearbox in fourth. If the noise isn't there then the problem is the layshaft. By putting the gearbox in fourth you bypass it as I believe all the other gears use the layshaft but fourth just joins the input and output shafts together.

If this isn't conclusive then drop the fluids in the diffs, you need to do that anyway as it hasn't been done since you had it but it has been through some water lately lol. This could tell you were a problem lies.

Finally and it is worth a look, I have noticed that having the props greased properly makes a big difference. I did mine again last night and it is soo much smoother.

Cheers for the help guys! I drained the transfer box earlier and also removed the cover but there was no real amount of damage to be seen

Well other than 1 chip
