Don't really know how to describe this.

When I turn on the ignition of a mates defender he has had delivered (90 v8)
It makes like a noise from what sounds like behind the binicle or driver side engine bay. It's like an electrical pump type noise but it doesn't go

I'd post a sound file but only got a ipad

It's an 89 g reg so doubt it. I was thinking fule pump it's like a loud clicking pumping noise

I thought it might be the starter motor solonoide clicking on and off but the engineer turns over fine on the starter...

More than likely going to be the low pressure fuel pump. Solid state pumps make a very quick "tappety" sound whilst they are running, even more so if it isn't effectively drawing fuel up from the tank. Find the pump and remove the outlet side with the ignition on to see if it is pumping fuel. If its an EFI, check the fuel supply to the high pressure pump or if it's carbed, check that the fuel is also reaching the carbs.

Thanks Tom,

Tapperty sound is good description. Ill locate the pump and check fule delivery and report back.

Was a load of sludge in the feed pipe to the pump so the pump was dry. Thanks for the tips... Onto my carb issue
