Need some help again :confused: My TD4 has started to make a very quiet noise from the front right as the car accelerates. Its as if the wheel balance is out or if im driving along a very small rumble strip. If I take the foot of the accelerator and free-wheel it seems to die off. Its not a major noise at the moment but they always start off quietly. Anybody got any ideas where I should look first had a quick look under her but I cant see anything obvious. Thanks
 
get under and give your drive shaft a shake up and down...should be tight near your IRD and hub, maybe a mm play at the very most
 
Drive shaft.You could pick a new one up from eeeeeeebay 70lbs.

Try local stealers for a laugh €700ish + phat.
 
thanks, have checked the drive shafts they dont seem to have much play in either side but the near side cv boot is in 2 pieces and coated the surrounding area in grease, was kinda obvious once I managed to get the plastic engine cover off, what a pain that was do all these be riveted on? I guess its a high percentage that I need a new drive shaft is there a way of checking without removing though
 
If it's just the CV joint that's U/S why not just change the joint, £25 to £35 ish on ebay.
 
The plastic engine undertray should not be a pain really.

There are no rivets to be dealt with, Although there are brackets which are riveted to the tray. You shouldn't have needed to touch them.

Save yourself a struggle later and check threads on here for where the bolts and screws are located and the easy way to refit it.

Don't be tempted to run without it as although its useless as a sump guard it makes a good **** deflector. There are loads of bits underneath and at the front that would be easily damaged by stones or gravel hitting them, plus there's no need to give the sensors etc. an extra soaking.

As for the noise - I agree that you seem to only need a new CV joint.
 
:doh: broke my undertray should have looked on here first just jumped right in:eek: may have to go with a new home made ali one when it comes to putting it back on.
I will get into a local mechanic tomorrow get the verdict hopefully your all right and a new cv joint will do the job :)
 
well its going to be a new drive shaft, this will sort out the obvious problem just hope it sorts out the quiet knocking to. Does it make sense that my gear stick will kind of move back an forth on its own (not in a mad banshee kind of way just gently) with the drive shaft as it is? Or could the small knock along with this movement be pointing to something more sinister in the gear box?

That made me laugh as I too, as a new owner, got under the vehicle to remove the tray and thought "surely its not bloody riveted on":)

Further looking and I found the eight bolts and six screws :)

Life is a constant learning curve.
 
All done got a replacement drive-shaft from J and R CV Joints | Brand new cv joints and driveshafts from a UK cv joint specialist for €60.00 2 year warranty on it to. The new shaft sorted out the gear stick shake as well so obviously related. To top it of a new **** catcher was made to so happy days. Thanks for the help as always:5bdriving::D
I got mine from him .Rang him on a Saturday and they arrived on the Monday or tuesday.I bought 2 ,replaced the O/S one and had to take it off when I was fixing a leak from the IRD .When I was pulling it out I overstretched the gaiter and split it,so I put back on the other new one.I intend fixing the split with wet suit glue.I don't know if they're weak but the one that's on now is still perfect 2 years on.
 
Good to know they last as long as they say. Have to agree with service and delivery both were very good ordered late on Friday and arrived Tuesday morning with DPD. Two day £15.00 service to Ireland aint bad and at £60.00 for the shaft made sense to replace the lot and not just CV joint.
