Over the last few days I've been getting a noise from what I believe is the front near side wheel. TIhe noise is best described as a vrr vrr vrr vrr and goes when over 35mph and is less when the engine gets warm. It doesn't seem to speed up much as I go faster. I won't be able to get it jacked up until the weekend to see if I can pinpoint an issue so thought I would ask the experts here in advance. I don't think it's a bearing issue as the sound is more rubbing or chaffing than rumbling. It's an 04 90. Any help or advice most greatly received.
 
discs, break calipers, mudshields, something stuck between any of these.

wheel bearings normally grind/squeal when they're shot but when you get it on the jack give the wheel a pull/push to see if there's any play
 
I jacked up the front wheels and they spin freely with no noise. It's just had new callipers, discs and pads on the rear so it shouldn't be those but it's hard to tell where the noise is coming from. I'll jack up the rear today to see if they spin freely and quietly.
 
I jacked up all four wheels today and all spin freely without noise so either I can't spin them fast enough or it's not the wheels. The fronts were heavier to spin but still moved freely. I also bounced on the bumper and steps to see if suspension was making a noise but it wasn't. I'm thinking now it's something else. Could it be a diff, clutch, transfer box or similar?
I've only just seen the reply to swap the tyre so haven't done that yet.
 
I've had it into a Land Rover garage today and they've confirmed a noise from the front nearside wheel but can't tell what it is. They wanted to replace the swivel ball housing at a cost of over £650 but I said not to do it as they couldn't confirm it was the culprit.

So I'm none the wiser but I'm guessing it's safe to drive!
 
Strewth, drive it to my house and I'll do it for 500:p, swivel housings don't move or make noise.......
I've rebuilt mine today including new cv joint, bearings and oil seals.

If you jack it up is there any play in the wheel? Grip it at 12-6 o'clock and check then at 3-9 o'clock and check again. This will show the condition of swivel bearings and stub axle bearings.
 
Wot he said ^^^^ and also when you test it at 3 - 9 o'clock if there is any play it might be down to track rod ends, though they wont make any noise, so not your problem. Just saying.
 
Spinning the wheel with no weight on it will no show up all the noises . My money is on brakes. Have you spun wheel and had someone gently press brake pedal?
 
Could be a bearing race with hairline crack in the bearing race, jacked up and spun up you will get little if any noise and no movement in the bearing/ hub.But with weight on it and driving you can get a "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise that can vary with the way you are steering.
 
I've just got it back from the garage and it's had a stub axle gasket, hub oil seal inner, hub nut and swivel greased plus 1.5hrs of labour. The noise has gone so I'm happy. thanks for all your input.
 
looks like it. They did want to charge me £650 to change something that didn't need changing :(
