How can l cure the constant clattering from the bonnet hinges on my 110?
There's a fair bit of play in them, and when you drive over a bumpy road there's a constant clattering particularly from the drivers side one.
l've replaced the plastic inserts but the new ones had just as much play as the old ones.
lf you pop the bonnet release the clattering stops. Also if you oil or grease the hinges it stops for a short time.

There are two rubber buffers between the rear edge of the bonnet and the bulkhead that may need replacing

How loose are the inserts in the bulkhead bracket ? mine are quite a tight fit and I have no rattle.

Cheers

l need to check these things
Where are these rubber buffers that you speak of located, on the bulkhead itself?

Are you missing these in your bonnet hinges?

Well, l don't have those rubber buffers that's for sure
2005 TD5 110
Bonnet to wing gap is even all the way down.
l replaced those plastic hinge inserts but there's still play in the hinges.

There is supposed to be some play, I sometimes think my hinges are going to pop apart when I lift the bonnet. Maybe the bit of the hinge that holds the rubber/plastic spacers need nipping up a bit to hold the spacers tighter.

Is your bonnet spring, at the front, set correctly?

neither me! I’ve never noticed those buffers on any defender and don’t have them on mine. Have you taken the bonnet off to check the fixings?

l don't know, can you tell me how to set it correctly or how l would know?

l've just checked and l definitely don't have the rubber buffers on the bulkhead.
Where were those fitted, under/behind the hinges?

not sure about the bonnet spring, but you have the two outboard rubber stops on the slam panel for the bonnet to sit against, they can be adjusted,

Cheers

Bonnet spring adjusts via winding in or out using a flat head. It will probably be seized in place so worth spraying in advance

Isn't there a seal in the lip on the bulkhead that the bonnet closes on to? That should hold it tight when it's held tight at the other end by the bonnet catch. Or did i imagine that

I have them on my 200Tdi, they are on the bulkhead, with the center on the line of the bonnet so the edge of the bonnet squeezes against them. From memory a couple of inches inside of the hinges towards the center.

I'm not sure about the bonnet spring either, but it's worth checking its got the front sprung in to place and not rattling.
This is it. And, as resto_d1 said, it's got a slot in the end that a flat blade screwdriver fits. You can't see it in this pic.
