A little help if you dont mind. we have a 56 plate Freelander 1 TD4 with about 67K on the clock. A few days ago the 3 amigos came on. No problem i thought i will work through the normal causes when i get a chance. The wife used the car yeaterday. The speedo has stopped working, the engine fault light has come on, the parking brake light has come on even when its off? Basically the dash is lit up like a christmas tree even though its still running?

Im guessing its a ECU electrical fault. Is this a known problem?

Presumably multiple ABS sensors have failed - or more likely likely, the loom where their wires converge is damaged or become unplugged.

Might be worth just making sure all the connectors are in place on the ABS ECU. The ABS ECU is under the drivers seat on my '99 F1, but I believe its part on the main ABS modulator on the later ones.

You could get the codes read (I take mine to an indie Landie garage). It will say why the lights are lit - but I'm thinking in this case there will be some cryptic thinking going on trying to determine what has caused the faults.

I'd be looking at electrical connections. Earth connections inside and out. Also the Ipack (dashboard) multi-plugs and the ABS modulator multi-plug.

Just been out for a quick look before i go back on night shift. I drove it up the road and the speedo is now working again and the parking warning light is also out. The engine warning light went out as i drove it up the road. So we are back to just the 3 amigos for the moment? Put my cheap OBD 11 scanner on i got off the bay. It had stored 2 fault codes both were P0501? I have erased these and see what happens next.

P0501 appears to be vehicle road speed signal implausible. Next question, what does the speedo determine the road speed signal from? ( thanks for the help ) :)

Pretty sure its the ABS sensors.

I think it needs at least 2 of them to be working to calculate a speed.

The ABS ECU reads the speed of every wheel, then sends the average of all wheels on the CAN bus data stream to the Ipack ECU for display. The 3 amigo's are also sent to the Ipack on the CAN bus data stream.

Thanks for that. Im presuming on a face lift 56 plate the ABS unit is the module on L/H side as you look in the bonnet with the brake pipes going in with a big multi plug attached? If it is im considering disconnecting the battery for a while, unplug the big plug and checking for corrosion water ingres? Thoughts?

If you will/may have to enter the radio activation code after reconnecting the battery? Do you know it? Worth getting it anyway, if its the original LR radio, a LR garage will be able to get it for you.

When reconnecting the battery, the rear window will drop. So you need to press the button to raise it which recalibrates it - don't walk away and leave it for snow/rain to get in overnight.

I'd probably just pull the plug and examine it - but you're suggestion of disconnecting the battery first is probably much safer!

I agree with those who have identified an ABS sensor. Exactly the same thing happened to me and was an intermittent fault, speedo would work and then stop and the lights you have mentioned lit up. Changed one rear wheel sensor and everything went back to normal and has been like that for 6 months.

Looks like i may well have found the problem. I decided to start at the beginning and drop the wheels off and check the ABS sensors and work back from there. On the N/S front wheel the cable to the ABS sensor had come out of the clip by the hub. It was rubbing on the inside of the front wheel rim as the rubber grommet above had also worked loose from the retaining clip. This was Shorting or had shorted the 2 wires together for the ABS sensor. A new sensor should sort it hopefully.

Thanks to all who have helped much appreciated. :)
