I have recently bought a 1997 2.5 diesel DT.Its great, but when you select drive or any gear (its auto). Theres no revs or drive unless you wait five mins.Revs okay in park and neutral. Could this be low gear box fluid? Any ideas would be appreciated.

check oil by draining a capfull out if black box wants looking at ,if allrigth reddish ,check level engine running in neutral ,if okay change oil and internal filter

Thanks for your reply. We've checked the gearbox oil,it was red and clean so ok.
plugged vehicle into testbook, the diagnostic said it was the outputshaft speed sensor. So that was changed.still no revs in drive or reverse only in park or neutral.
Could this possibly be the XYZ switch or EAT ECU? Any ideas?

Sorry Blackdog but I can't quite get my head round this.

If you don't want drive - neutral or park - then the engine will rev.
If you want drive - any gear - then you put your foot on the throttle but nothing happens.
However if you wait 5 minutes then the engine will rev and the car will drive.

Once everything is warmed up and you switch off and back on what happens?

Is there any half-way situation, do the revs build up as the car warms or is it more like a switch operating?

And a couple of general questions that might help you now and in the future. Have you got a copy of RAVE and where in the world are you?

I don't know what the mechanism is, but on my car, if the engine isn't creating enough power at idle I get this too.
Have seen it when I've left MAP pipe off, forgot to connect injector 4 lead or got the quantity adjustment wrong when fannying about with the FIP.
So... I'd be taking a look at all the plumbing around the intake - manifold, MAP/MAF pipes, air filter etc etc.
