The main purpose of number plates is to make vehicles readily identifiable for road traffic enforcement and road safety purposes. The vehicle registration numbers must be correctly displayed on number plates as set out in the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.
The Government recognises the importance of historic vehicles being allowed to retain their authenticity by continuing to display period number plates and this is provided for in the legislation. Regulation 18 of the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, allows for vehicles registered in the historic tax class to display number plates in keeping with the age of the vehicle i.e. black and white or black and silver plates.
Due to the recent changes which exempt historic vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 from paying road tax, this has had a direct impact on the number plate display regulations.
As part of the changes to display regulations in 2001, the law allows vehicles recorded as being in the historic tax class to use the black and white or black and silver style plates. Since April 2015, vehicles manufactured before 1975 are now able to display the older style marks providing they have applied to the DVLA and are recorded within the historic tax class.
Vehicles that are not recorded in the historic tax class by the DVLA are not eligible to display black and white or black and silver registration plates and should therefore only display registration plates in the current standard.

I think the gov have, as so often, got themselves in a mess trying to reconcile 2 contradictory bits of legislation.
Reminds me of when Reliants had to have reverse gear blanked off in order to be able to drive them on a bike licence (coz bikes don't have reverse). Then there started to be bikes with reverse (Russian, for when a sidecar was attached) and they had to let Reliants have reverse.
In any case, why would you want to put old plates on a vehicle which didn't have that style? Not authentic in my book!
