We were running a 1961 VW Beetle when the requirment for screen washers came in. Ours was never fitted with one but the regs seemed to be retrospective, at least that's what we were told so we got one. At the time a lot of shops were selling very simple kits - a plastic pump/button to fit under the dash (little more than a water pistol), a bottle and 2 jets. We fitted one but it needed a hole in the metal VW dash so in the meawhile we carried a squeezy bottle and held it out the quarterlight. This was the passngers job (me) and we used this for quite a while with no problems. I got very good at it, my other jobs were checking for oncoming traffic (it was LHD) and diving under the dash to swap to researve tank if the engine spluttered (at this time Beetles didn't have a fuel gauge). I got very fast at that, it happend on the Hammersmith flyover once which took a real team effort.

And I think my Series 3 is uncouth!
