New chassis in a week or so, no stopping me then! I'll search in the for sale bit, thanks Floss

Checked, now sold and not a DB anyway.

Don't know, I'll try to find out. Someone said they're more likely to ground off-road. Do you find this?

I only tow two or three times a year, taking the tin tent to LZ13 (of course!), Suffolk show and similar. The only reason I thought about an adjustable hitch is that it would make coupling the caravan a little easier, as the spare wheel gets in the way during the process. I'm beginning to think that I'll stick with the present system. If you do find something detachable I'd be glad of a heads up!

Wow! This is exactly what I want and if I could get something like this then brilliant!

Only problem is he doesn't mention if it legal or if it still suitable to 3.5tonne towing limit?

There isn't an approved tow rating. Although I used mine towing my challenge truck around on 3.5tonne trailer with no problems. The plates are 10mm thick and pins are 3/4" which are a genuine item not something home made

That's great thanks for checking that out, I've never doubted that it couldn't pull the weight, however just didn't know if there is any legal side to it that's all.

I agree , it is the legal side I would be more concerned about. What does the law say about a towing hitch?

Cheers

Tow bars need to have a D marking in the EU. Stating its capacity in kn

The "D" value is calculated as follows:

(GVW x GTW ) / (GVW + GTW) x 9.81/1000 (gravity)= kn

Where GVW is Gross Vehicle Weight, and GTW Gross Trailer Weight.

The maximum D value for an M1 vehicle is 17.7kn that represents a GVW of 3500 kgs towing GTW of 3500kgs.

It is possible to design a towbar that fits the whole range of models of one particular vehicle. Because Towing Capacity is related to GVM then each model may have a different value for D. To prevent overload of the Towing Vehicle refer to the Vehicle Manufacturers' Handbook to confirm the GTW for your particular model.

I have this if its any good to you
but thinks its off a later defender
i have a new tow bar for it also £25

Okay so it's illegal for the fact that it does not have a D mark?

I understand some Land Rover towbar can only hold some weight, some are 2500kgs and mine is 3500kgs

However on the weight plate on the car it says that my vehicle can pull the 3500kgs

Thanks for the offer Greyhair, but I am now thinking the solution might be worse than the problem. I don't tow often, and I can hitch the caravan easily as long as I take the spare wheel off. I thought the DB hitch might make this easier, but I would pay a penalty due to the hitch grounding.
