Hi all. Been lurking for... well... a long time. Also been looking to buy a Landy project for.. well..... a long time. Still procrastinating.

Anyway thought I'd say hi before asking some questions in other forums!

Poop kicker from the West Country (UK) - looking for a Series (88) or maybe 90 era Landy to restore (yes I'm looking to go back to being a tax dodger). Only issue is lack of garage space so ideally I've been trying to find one that doesn't require a complete new chassis. The front of the garage is also on a slope... but more about that in another thread...

Main reasons for going down this route? Well, it's a Land Rover, the vehicle of my childhood dreams... no, wait, that was a Avro Vulcan, but it was up there. Also about time I learned on myself to do some of that weldy stuff (I am clueless and have double vision, what can possibly go wrong?). I've taken many a small engine apart in my yoof but never a large one so there is that as well... anyway, I'm waffling and my tea is going cold.

Good luck with the search. Even basket cases are fetching top price at the moment but I’m sure something will come up...

Would love a fixer-uper as well, and was thinking pretty much the same stuff, no space in garage, limited room outside, but small hurdles, one at a time.
 
Yep, still looking. Life things got in the way.

Going to look at a 200tdi era Defender this weekend - is there anything in particular I should be looking for/listening to/asking about engine-wise?

Nice shout about the Vulcan, beautiful aircraft and shame they are all grounded.

Hi, main things to check is the bulkhead, both footwells, top corners where the windscreen hinge is and around the door hinges for rust.
Rear of the chassis tend to rust so check where the main chassis rails meet the rear crossmember. But check all of the chassis anyway for rot.
All this can be repaired or replaced depending how deep your pockets are.
As for the rest just check if all the electrics work and there's no major loud knocks or bangs when driving (like you would on any vehicle).
Overall they are basic vehicles and easy to work on. The 200tdi engines are strong and reliable if they have been looked after so check the service history.
