My 1986 RRC has lost both headlights, all other lights work fine including full beam. Checked bulbs and fuses in the dash all OK.

Any ideas please?! My 90 has a fuse box under the bonnet but can't see anything for the rangey.

Can only find diagrams for 1987, but that shows fuses 1 and 2 in fuse box as being low beam. 7.5 amp fuses.

According to my LR w/s manual the '86 is the same. Long shot, could it be a problem with the dim-dip unit (if fitted) which takes it's signal from the oil pressure switch.
 
Sorry for the late reply, I'm in wales on the coast and can only get signal if I do a half hour walk up the hill!

The 7.5 amp fuses are all fine - starting to think it could be the dim-dip unit as well.

I'll leave it for now, will just have to stick to daytime driving and take a proper look when I'm home. Just thought I would ask as something similar happened on my 90 and it turned out it was just a fuse under the bonnet for the fusebox in the dash which I didn't know about.

Hi, I had the same issue and after working back through I found the dip switch in the column was faulty as on of the contacts had been bent away so it could make contact , must have happened when the kids were playing in there , just a quick straighten and all OK, may get a spare switch just in case as it may be a longer term weak point now

Give all the wires near the headlights a good wiggle and see if they come on again.
Range rover wiring goes to sleep and needs a prod to get it going again.:)
 
Back in the 90's (not the vehicle, the year :D ) I had to attend to several Vauxhalls in which the headlamps would not go out! Owners were having to disconnect the battery.

Anyway, the dim dip units would go faulty and revert to keeping headlamps on as a safety precaution.

The fix was a simple removal of the device and plug in the two hanging wires.

So, normally, if a dim dip goes haywire, you should have constant lamps. I'd be checking the stalk switch too ;)
 
Just use a circuit tester and trace the power. If you have power both sides of the fuse, check you have power at the switch. If you have power there then it must be between the switch and the lights.
 
If using over rated bulbs there is a chance that the contacts in the steering column dip switch have bent and failing to make contact
My Disco did that and only main beam flash worked although all other lights were fine
