so with the engine running, you press the clutch down to the floor and when you try to select any gear it just wont go in.

Its the same if the clutch is up or down ??

I wonder if the clutch is stuck down?

I would of expected some grinding if the peddle was up.
Do you get full travel with the gear lever (as it was when you were driving it) just no drive?

If the peddle is light it may just be the return spring that's lifting it up, I think this in inside the foot well above the peddle. Try removing the spring and seeing if the peddle drops to the floor?

If it dose then I would look at the clutch cylinder as see if its jammed / broken?

Great, thanks for that I will have a look later. I'm supposed to be installing the new bathroom so the missus will not be pleased if I have'nt got at least the toilet in today!!!

check you've got fluid in the clutch reservoir, if it's empty you might need a new slave cylinder. You could try bleeding the system. Could be knackered master cylinder. Well worth checking over the hydraulics 'cos they're the easiest bit to fix!

Thanks for the help chaps.

Reading over the posts and getting back to your bit about the gears grinding etc, before the gears would'nt engage at all they were grinding... so this leads somewhere me thinks?

Tried the spring as you said but the pedal does'nt drop still spongy.

Still working on bathroom...
