Hi I’m new to this forum but need some advice.

I’ve got 55 plate freelander 1.8 petrol and I’m having issues with the gearbox/clutch.

If I drive any longer than 25 minutes and stop I cannot get it into gear unless I switch the engine off and then it will not let me change gear even with the clutch to the floor.

I’ve changed the master/slave cylinder and checked the gearbox fluid level and it’s fine.

So is the clutch on its way out or is the gearbox faulty please help.

Thanks

Lee

Did you free off the clutch release lever where it goes through the bell housing? Is the slave cylinder bracket cracked? Was the master/slave an OE part?

I had the same issue before replacing master/slave cylinder and I made sure clutch release lever was free
The last two questions Nodge asked are important. Was the new unit cheapo ebay or good quality LUK or similar.
Did you check the bracket before fitting the new master slave as they are known to crack.

It was good quality part and I also replaced the bracket. I've checked again and I cannot see any cracks in the cylinder.

I guess it might be worth doing an oil change in the gearbox but that's probably clutching at straws. No pun intended.
Is the clutch bite point OK when you first start off?
Does it gradually get worse or is it all of a sudden?

It could be that there s air in the pipeline. There is a procedure I use to get the air out the hydraulics. This involves hanging the master up higher than the slave, then pressing the slave piston in fully a few times. This dispels any trapped air up to the reservoir where it should be.

Hi Lee

I have had a similar problem with my Freelander. I would go along with all the other replies, particularly make sure you have a OEM clutch master/slave cylinder, the aftermarket ones aren't worth it. If you have exhausted all the tips here, then the only thing left is to change the clutch pedal assembly, there is a known fault with these not providing enough travel, however at £500 I tried a simple modification to get more clutch travel. I put a 0.5cm piece of screw thread into the white cap on the end of the slave cylinder, I drilled the tip so the rounded slave rod sits in it, you cant fit much more in or the slave rod will jump out. It's not perfect but it's made mine driveable rather than undriveable.

My wife's had this problem it turned out to be the gear stick linkage when it got warm it was terrible so I covered it in grease the problem went away
