HI All, Aplogies but this may be a long post.

I have a 1976 Series 3 2 1/4 petrol and last weekend, I had to limp it home in 2nd and 4th as no other gears were available. It has been sat for a week as to dark by the time I get home from work.

Spent the weekend investigating: -
1. Drained Gearbox oil - dirty but no bits
2. Removed Gear Box to check Clutch - All appears OK, alot of wear remaining although these is some oil on the inside of the bell housing, this does not appear to be on Clutch plate.
3. Clutch Hydraulics, look ok, all pipes in good order and no oil leaks. resevior level good.
4. 4 Wheel drive not engaging, high low appear to be engaging as well.
5. Inspection plates removed and no obviously signs of a problem.
6. Will select a gear or feels like it does but no drive.
7. Drive Shafts are turning when pushing in neutral.

Any body got any ideas on when I can check, or anything that I should be looking for in the above as never been near gear boxes before

Thanks

Hard to tell, but seems to me very much a gearbox problem. The series gear box can be fixed with basic tools and a good manual.

Hi, I had a feeling that was going to be a suggestion, do you know where I can get hold of a decent manual as I do have someone that could help with an overhaul. guess it is going to be cheaper than a refurbished box.

Have you checked your rear halfshafts are ok?
Are the 4wd selector shafts free under the cover at front output 4wd selector ends.

I haven't checked half shafts on both sides, but certainly 1 side is OK as was jacked up, I have down to check the other side.

The 4wd selector seems to be moving ok, but not taken anything off yet to inspect, as was concentrating on getting some sort of drive 1st.

Will add to the list for the weekend

Ok for update we have taken then gearbox cover of and the layshaft bearing fell out as broken and also some wear on the main bearing, therefore we are replacing both as a precaution and also several gaskets and seals whilst it is in pieces. Also repairing handbrake as cakes in grease etc. Thanks everyone.

May sound stupid but the red lever wasnt in neutral was it? Also if overdrive is fitted same thing can happen
