Hi All

I wondered if you could help me. I decided that I would put my Disco 300tdi into difflock and see what happened. I have had this machine for 5 years and it had never had the diff used before. I took it out of diff thought no more about it. Today I was driving down the road and I lost all drive. When I put it into any gear, there was no drive. The clutch makes an awful noise until you depress the pedal

What is the most likely cause

You do know how the 'little' gearstick works don't you?:eek:

Now go to the introduce yourself threads, you're unlikely to get further answers till you've at least done this ...

However, it sounds like you've either not put it back into Hi or Low, or you left it in difflock on the road and screwed up the drivetrain (mainshaft or half-shafts usually).

I'd try making sure the difflock lever is out of difflock and in lo or high ... High is towards you, Lo is away from you, you might have to juggle the clutch whilst in gear to get it in properly, sometimes.

Yes, it could ...

but you should makes sure it is not other things before you pull the gearbox off ...

Is the 'diff lock' light off on the dash?

Have you had someone move the lever while you watch the rods underneath to make sure diff lock is disengaged?
 
Thank you all for your help. Diff lock light is off on dash although when tried for the first time it took alot of fumbling until it went out. The gear box was also lumpy after I had used the diff. If I have screwed up the drive train is this serious? You have to excuse me but I only joined this forum today and no little about Disco engines (if was a motorbike it would be a different story!)
 
If you can be bothered taking the centre console out (the bit around the gear lever / diff lock lever) all will be revealed. Takes about 20 minutes to get it all out and you can check diff lock lever and linkages. If it's not moved in 5 years it could probably do with cleaning and greasing!
 
i'd say it's probably jumped out of high or low and it's in neutral.

try moving it into high again, maybe when slightly rocking it.

they can get well stiff if you never use them.

when i picked up a disco a couple of hours from me, i was well dubious if it would make it home.

the brakes were a bit iffy and it made some odd sounds which led to me pulling over a few times.

then, when the heavens opened up and it poured down i lost all drive.. miles from anywhere in the countryside.

i managed to pullover and spent ages crawling on the wet muddy verge checking this and that.. on the verge of having a hissy fit.

after about 30 mins of a bit of panic and having decided the gearbox had blown up. i decided to push up on the diff stick and clonk it went into gear :D

i had changed it into high low on the test drive, but it was so unused it didn't go in properly. :D
