Hello all and thanks in advance.

I have a 1995 Disco 1 with a TDI 300 engine and auto gearbox.

Last week while on a long trip I suddenly started loosing power and car slowed down by itself. I pulled over and couldn't see anything specific wrong. Checked transmission fluid and level was good.(fluid had just been replaced).
After turning off the engine and trying to restart the starter would spin but it would no longer start.
The mechanic diagnosed the problem to be a drive plate (felx plate) and sure enough after pulling out the engine it was found to be broken in the center.
Replaced the drive plate and put engine back together and started fine but it does not drive at all. No forward or reverse in High or Low with diff locked or not. Simply nothing. I don't even get any reaction or feeling that any gears are engaging. I checked the linkage under the vehicle of of both gear box and transfer case and everything seem to be moving.

Mechanic suggested the gearbox pump. Another mechanic suggested the same and hypothesized that it may have been damaged during the re-installation of the engine.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

how did they fit it torque convertor fitted to gear box or torque convertor fitted to engine ,if torque convertor is not properly fitted to gear box before fitting gear box to engine or engine to gear box(you measure depth of bolt lugs on t/c from bell housing face and measure how far drive plate sits out from rear of engine plate face ,t/c must sit further into gear box than drive plate from engine by 1 -3 mm) gear box pump would have been damaged during installation , completely the person who fitted it fault

Hi James, The torque converter was never removed. It was left in place and engine removed and then reinstalled.
I take it the symptoms do match a pump diagnosis?

had t/c slipped forward then ?thats why measuring is important its the only real sure way you know t/c is fitted correctly does sound like pump failure providing box has oil in it

Box has oil in it. I have a feeling though that they towed the car a couple of hundred meters on four wheels and not sure if they new to put the transfer box in neutral. Would this have done damage to cause the symptoms I'm having?
The car was being "fixed" in middle of the desert by a mechanic who knows nothing about Land Rovers and using primitive equipment. It was a miracle he didn't do more damage.
I now have to put it on a truck and take it to shop in the nearest town and trying to get more sense of what needs to be done to keep an eye on them while working.

no wouldnt have hurt it at all ,it can be a problem it towed for a good bit at higher speeds as there would be no lubrication for epicylics or clutch packs but that distance wouldnt be a problem,i presume it worked allright before so most likely is pump with your description

the only other thing would be whether hes fitted drive plate to far forward, nearer engine so pulling t/c out of pump drive ,they have selectable spacers to alter position so it can be matched with t/c,another reason why you measure
