Hi,
I am fitting a Nissan SD33 into my 2.5na 90.Has anyone done this before. It looks like I will have to change the gearbox to the V8 one.
Please Help.

I have a 110 with this engine in it fitted to a landrover lt77 gearbox. excellent drive torque oozes out of it. Love driving it. Scary really when in 5th and not watching the speedo you try to change up again while doing 75mph!!

Hi,
Is it the LT77 V8 gearbox(long shaft) or the short shaft gearbox. My engine is the SD33 turbo engine.

how did you adjust it? did it fit precisely? are the 90 and 110 models the same concerning the engine? did you have to take your land rover to a specific car-shop, or any car-shop could do the adjustment?

In most cases you just need to buy a conversion kit.

The kit should contain engine mounts and a conversion plate to the gearbox.

Its just a case of removing the engine, rewelding the mounts to the chassis, and then dropping the new engine in.

You then just need to play around with the fuel intakes and turbo's etc...

Its a weekend job really. I am thinking of dropping the Isuzi 2.8td in.

thanks again man.

Hello.

I see that a few people have converted there Land rovers to a Nissan patrol SD33 Engine. I am in considering this and wondered if there is any advise on this matter.
I have a couple of Questions though.

1. How do you get around the problem of the difference in voltage being that the Nissan is 24 Volt and the land rover is 12 Volt? is it a case of getting hold of a 12 volt starter, Alternator, and relay assembly or as I suspect a bit more involved.....

2. is there any Company's anybody could recommend regarding adapter plates. Nissan SD33 6 cylinder onto a Lt77 box. Short splined shaft. Landy had a 300TDI in it at one time.

Many thanks for all your help.

Eddie.

Hi,
My Nissan engine came with Milner conversion plate, this would only fit the long shaft gearbox.I do not think Milner make these now.I am saving up the cash to have the welding etc done. The suspension will also need to be uprated.:)
Cheers.
I forgot to mention mine was allready 12v.

In most cases the sd33 was sold as both 12v and 24v, the starter, alternator and heaterplugs need to be changed, we made our own adapter plate which was not too mush trouble a little bit of dry fitting on the floor before we fitted to the truck helped. The Nissan Laurel (car) electric bits (12v) fitted our engine, we bought new heater plugs, Cannot say that this configuration applies everywhere as we are based in Ireland.

Lucky you having a 12V model. that helps no end.
Suspension covered. fitting Twin old man Emu at front ans single at rear.
Just need to know how to get around Voltage problem.

Cheers Eddie:eek:

Sorry ment 1 upraited spring with twin Shocks. on the front. Single spring, Single shock on the back. This will rase Landy 2" so I can fit Serious rubber have not done the sums yet on Maximum diameter.

Here qwe go veviving a six year old thread! But hey it aint too long of a thread and it's right on topic:

I have recently bought a 1989 90 that was once a 2.5 TD but had the SD33 (N/A) conversion done to it at some point. It has a short shaft LT77 box. All the electrics are 12V BTW. My current problem is trying to figure out what they did in the conversion. Firstly, there's a bad vibration from the bellhousing area when revving the engine. I split the engine from the box and sure enough the flywheel wasn't running on-centre. It seems that they have used the LR flywheel, got it drilled for the 8 bolts into the Nissan crankshaft, and then had to use two lipped spacers to mount it the correct distance from the crankshaft. The first of these spacers was merely tacked in position and was off-centre. I have tried re-tacking it with limited success so far. I have also made up a bush that sits into the flywheel centre hole and snugly fits into each spacer in a hope that this would centre everything up.

Also, for some reason they have put a roughly cut 8mm plate between the adapter housing and the engine. I'm not sure what this is doing exactly other than spacing.

Has anyone on here done these conversions knowing what's involved and possibly how I might fix my vibrating flywheel? Thanks in advance!

For anyone interested in info on the SD33 (as fitted to the 160 Patrol) this site has loads of information: http://nerok.info/engine/sd33/index

if it was my landy i would put back an orignal 200 300 tdi in it and be done with it . those conversions always give problems as your well aware of

Lovely engine! Used to be a common conversion, and gearbox adaptor plates are out there.

The 12/24v is no problem! 24v is only need to starting. To solve this, you just run a kill switch to the cab, turn on the second battery to start it, and then knock it off when started. That was the old Patrol way!

3.3 N/A is the best one - worry not about the mileage on it......half a million mile engines are pretty average. There are ones out there with 250k, they are just run in, so don't worry!

3.3t is the same engine, with a turbo added. Built for the spanish market - no turbos were available in the UK. These did have head gasket problems. That said, they are easy to do - head rebuild is around 2 hours. But you will need a hand lifting the head off - they are cast iron and pretty heavy!

2.8 is troublesome, and was the later version. Again regular head problems.

SD will deliver 35mpg no matter how you drive it in a patrol, probably more in a landy which is considerably lighter. These engines were used in Nissan Lorries, airport tugs and fork lifts, and cranes. They are easily indentifiable.

Need any spares -i do have a shed full!

Well I am actually in dire need of an oil cooler housing for this engine! Would you have such a part Auto? This engine suffered from the usual build-up of crap in the cooler and this one was so bad that the gunk had rotted the housing. I am on the route of fitting an aftermarket oil cooler at the moment cos I simply couldn't find parts ANYWHERE but would still like to just fit a good housing and keep it original. The cooler itself is fine and is a 5 bar cooler as fitted to Turbo SD33s and late N/A SD33s (as is mine). Where are you based? :)
