Need some expert help on buying a Range Rover.... Looking to spend max £28k on a well specd but classy Range Rover (no white ones or stupid wheels).

I have been looking at a number of the used specialists such as Saxtons.

Questions:

1. Warranty, I assume all warranties are worthless and I need to budget a few grand per annum on repairs??
2. Better with a low mileage 3.6 than a high mileage 4.4 TDV8
3. I'm based in Glasgow, are there any good specialists rear by I could speak to re servicing etc?
4. Main issues to look out for? I have done a bit of hunting on here but not seen a core list of issues.
5. Must have options? I have had a pile of BMWs and Audis and there are always options to have or avoid, assume this is less of the case here as the cars come well specd as std?

Appreciate any support/comments
D

I would personally go for the 4.4 TDV8, more refined, more economical and more power.

Not sure if it is the way the pictures are presented on my ipad, but they have been badly resized and squished, wouldn't trust anyone who cant take a decent picture esp. for over £26k......

Options to have or avoid....all Range Rovers will give you issues, so just pick the one with the toys you want regardless....

The later models are certainly better put together than the early L322's but are still plauged with water leaks and electrical gremlins.

Hate to point a newbie to a different forum, but in the spirit of helpfullness, tey fullfatrr.com - Index as they deal with the later models more than we do....

I've just done a screen grab on my IPhone so prob my fault.

Yeah appreciate they get better over time just concerned I buy one, spend a few grand on a warranty and everything that goes wrong is classified as "wear and tear" and I have to foot the bill. I used to either new cars or used approved BMWs (535d and X5 35d).

So if I do need to budget for repairs myself, what's a good budget?

Plus thanks for the FullFatRR link. Posted on there too.

With that kind of budget I'd go buy something reliable, but if you must buy an L322 I reckon you need to have £3 to £5k spare for repairs.

Such as?? My X5 was hardly reliable. The Merc is rubbish and I'm not really a Touareg or Cayenne person. I would consider a Q7 but the 3.0 I had an extended test drive before and it's under powered without the 4.2 and not old fashioned. And I don't particularly like the disco. My sister in law has a 2013 HSE and I wasn't that impressed, feeling like it needs a spinnaker going down wind.

I would be genuinely interested in which modern vehicle qualifies as reliable.

Even though I feel as though I have had my fill of modern electronics, and the PITA nonsense they can cause, I am still interested.

(genuinely, no wind up)

As the OP says, he has had a few, and they were all carp, I could add a couple of names to the list. Living in the sticks, "unreliability" becomes a major issue, and the constant back and to any sort of garage, let alone a main stealer, frankly unacceptable ( and pathetic ). Hence no electronics on my Disco!

28 is both too much and not enough to spend. I'd spend that money on a new motor or if I were spending it second hand then I'd look to spend about half of that. JMHO.

So, the wife wants a range rover. I'm currently spending circa £500 on her A6 Avant lease. So I was happy to continue to spend that, so what do you suggest?? A £20k 2009 3.6??

The L322 is an X5 in a different frock, ergo the faults are much the same. The only reason the newer ones seem better, is because they are newer. Newish ones are starting to appear on here already.
Porsche and unreliability go hand in hand in my personal experience and yes Mercs are crap, even the boss said so.
I know what I would buy if I were spending that king of money but it would not appeal to you.

I've had two Jeeps, so I hope you don't mean them. They were horrific.

Though my dad still loves them... His current plug

No, not Jeep, now owned by Fiat. Ford or Chevy probably, but no longer up to date with the reliability stuff as I will never again be in the position to buy.
Stlll, I can dream:)

Just to follow up, I did join and post on the Full Fat RR forum and got some excellent feedback and support. Here's the link incase you are in my boat and following this thread....
http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic32057.html

I'm currently planning in purchasing a clean low mileage VSE with Ivory interior in a dark grey or black, spending up to £25k but waiting till next April. Hopefully by then the 4.4s may be coming into range.

Thanks for all you feedback and I will update if/when thing change.

with that sort of money...??

I'd go for a macan diesel. with no extras...

previously always a toyota, but off the mark at present..

Macans are still £45k+ so WAY OVER budget plus we need a full size car. We miss the X5s size, the A6 touring is surprisingly small inside.
