Ive been looking for a landy for a long time and always wanted a 90, i finally got one from a bloke i used to know, he assured me that to go through the MOT it only needed the brakes doing.. what a fool i was. Turns out it needs both bulk hear outriggers replacing...

Im a little disappointed to say the least..errk

Im in Cambridgeshire and i need to find someone to replace these, my welding skills are ok ish, but i dont think i could replace them.. can anyone give an idea on how much this is likely to cost and if there is a fairly local bloke or garage i could use?
 
how bad are the outriggers? is it just the ends or the whole way along?...... i did mine a few weeks back and it wasnt too bad to do (im no pro welder btw, just basic knowlage) not sure on rates for a profesional job but i did one side in about 4-5 hours, thats cutting old bit off, fabbing new part and welding back on, i work slow and faff about with things like this, .... may help you get an idear on price if you know someones hourly/day rate. I employed a local welder (not near cambridgeshire though) to weld a car up for me a little while ago and he charged £20/h cash..worked fast and top job done. hope this helps
 
thanks for the info, how did you cut the old one out - did you use a saw or a grinder, how did you get on with welding the top, did you reach ok?
 
You have to take the floor out to do the outriggers properly, that's where your cost will come in as getting the floor out can be a bit of a faff if its never been done before. The Outriggers usually need to be cut/ground back and then probably plate the chassis if its knackered and then weld the new over the hole. If the outrigger has gone on the outside, i.e near the door handles, you may be able to just patch them, I think I patched both my rears by just welding a plate on the outside and they are ok. Both front ones needed replacing.
 
Bit late for you now, but I'm always extremely wary when someone says "All it needs for the MOT... few quid is all...." If all it takes is 'the brakes doing' then why didn't he do them, and get it MOT'd for a few pounds and get maybe a couple of hundred more back in return for a full ticket?

Here's how I did my outrigger, well the drivers side, I did nearside when I also did the bulkhead ... and I'm no fabricator or welderiser ...

thats a good point Paul, thanks for the assistance, ive taken the floor panels out and found there is alot of work that needs doing on those outriggers, the landy is a keeper, so i've just got to bite the bullet and get it done. I've contacted a few places locally to see if they can do it for me...
 
I learnt to weld on my 90 because the chassis was mint and had never been welded... Truth was it had never been welded, slight lack of information was that the chassis had been attacked with expanding foam and filler.... ****ers

MAKE SURE they do it properly, when I purchased mine it had new outriggers, but the bolt through to the bulkhead doesn't fit as they didn't line them up correctly.... there is always a reason its getting sold.
 
ive had a few quotes - best price ive had so far is £300 inc VAT for replacement + parts, does that sound about right?

Did you tell you'd take the floor out already ... it may be cheaper if the labour is already done?
 
he's coming over to take a look... i'll ask, as that floor took a while to get out as most of the screws were rusted in

i used a grinder for most of it,, and plasma cutter for the tight bits although i could have got by with just a grinder and some old (smaller) discs if i didnt have one available. my floor was already out as was preparing to do bulkhead, its a pain to remove floor/seatbox etc but in long run makes life alot easier, you would proberbly need to replace some fizings due to cutting out rusty ones but they are easy to get and cost very little. if you can get job done cheaper by removing parts yourself first i would, unless tine is against you. if they doo a good job £300 isnt a bad price at all in my opinion having done the job, especially if its in a bad way.

my nearside outrigger was mainly fiberglass and the bulkhead was stuffed with plasic carrier bags and then filler over the top, only discoverd when i took a grinder to it and got a burning plastic smell. did make me laugh though what some people will do.
 
Jeebus, whats the rest of the chassis like? Looking at it I don't think I would be jacking it up from there.
