freelander

Hi!!
eveyone im yas from dewsbury, just bought my first 4x4!! a 1.8 petrol freelander.just want to know what they are like? common problems etc.
I'm just getting used to driving it as it is rather different from my previous car,-puegeout 206 1.4!!!
 
you'll find it very different from your previous car, primarily due to the fact that the froggy thing could travel for at least 100 miles without breaking down

were you drunk when you brought it ?
 
To be honest! i was looking for a practical family car and couldnt make my mind up on what to buy and was generally looking at all makes. I then saw the this freelander on for sale!! and thought that it would be perfect!!
I asked my brother for his opinion as he had a p38 range rover 2.5 dt and the only problem he had was the compressor for the suspension!! not bad as he had for 4 years!! He said to buy it as its in good condition and the trader was honest and told us that it did need a head gasket but he has had that done and a minor service . Its a 99 v plate, 95000 miles and paid only £2000.
 
the Hippoo is not a bad motor as a pretend SUV. But having had the head gasket done is no promise that it wont go again and soon - as well as all the other problems on Hippoos. Dealers, and a growing number of independants, are now starting to refuse to carry out HGF fixes as they dont want to warranty the work.

if yu can - flog it for as much as you can and get a TD4.
 
Is it really that bad!! how much does a head gasket plus fitting cost? how long will it last and what are the tell tale signs? would the car totatly die or would i be losing its perfomance? i would sell it but i have other priorites!! I also have a friend who is a mechanic and wouldnt charge me to much!!
 
well! - I had the KV6 and it suffered HGF twice in 18 months (yes it was repaired properly with new type gasket etc etc) at £1800 a throw.
tell tall signs - coolant loss or mayo in the coolant. dont rely on the temp guage. check the water and oil level daily.
 
i've known k series engines do 100k without needing a gasket and others needing one every 20k. its not the fact the factory gasket was weak but more to do with the way the engine was bolted together. there have been attempts to make them better with improved gaskets but in my experience once the factory gasket had gone the engine blew its gasket with more frequency. they aint so bad that they are part of your yearly servicing but you do need to keep an eye on your water level and condition of water and oil....milky white sludge and its game over.
 
Thanks all for advice!! i have been checking oil filler cap, its nice and clean and its not needing water topping up but i have had clutch judder sometimes when moving of? Whats that?

you saying you and your brother tried to find simarlarities from a freelander to a P38? personally once the head has ahd to be done flog it for as much as yer can and if yer still after a freelander get one with a better engine.:eek:
 
oh and clutch judder could work out to be the gearbox. cut yer losses and and get shut as it sound like yer bought a baddun here mate.
p.s. sorry we all sound a bit harsh, youll find alot of us are pretty dry on here we just take some getting used to.
