hi all , new to all this landy stuff so please be nice :p .i own a series3 lwb diesel 1983 its been running fine until i went out in the snow and used transfer box for first time since owned it.Dont want to own up to this but got it stuck on a nasty hill and it took me 35 mins to get him out,did have to give the old boy some welly to get out of embarasing situation.When back on clearer roads i stopped and put it back in normal rear wheel drive ,then about 2 miles later it started making a really scary noise that sounds like a world war 2 machine gun (bang bang bang) from wot appears to be under the bonnet,nursed him back home and a bit reluctant to fire up again for fear o=f really breaking something .Any clues could it be transfer box even though was taken out of 4 wheel drive(ddo have fwb'sfitted)has the engine gone to heaven.hope someone may help .ta very much
 
Was the banging noise just when you where moving or was it all the time.

Did you just use 4wd or did you use low ratio?

Did you engage your free Wheeling hubs before selecting 4wd/
 
Hi engaged free wheeling hubs then selected 4 wheel drive and when i was still stuck i then used low and the banging noise is all the time .I have tried putting it in and out of all the diff boxes and 4 wheel drive but just realised its still on lock on the hubs ,was wondering wether to call out the hay hay man and let him have a listen ?cheers mark
 
Well if the noise is all the time even when stationary, this narrows it down to the engine.

have you checked your oil level, has it been serviced lately.

Did the temp Gage go any ware.
 
Oil is fine only done oil change not so long ago and topped it up 2 or 3 days before problem,mmm tempgage always sits just on boredr of cold and norm and replaced this only 3 months ago also changed all the coolant.me thinks it may be time to have a go at a massive challenge for me and try to perhaps fit a 200tdi but will have to look at wot mods need doing ...you may hear a cry of help from milton keynes !!! thanks for your reply
 
just been out and fired him up on cold tick over it scares the sh*t out of me ,but when revd it sound normal then foot off pedal and i am scared again!!!! that is with clutch pedal full to ground.

mmm i love beer...
 
aaahhh pooh and sh*t maybe time for me to get greasy and try a engine transplant,should be fun 4 someone who knows nowt bout engines or or serious stuff ... hey this is why i bought a landy so will update you thanks for your help ..and eerm sh*t i am now really scared...
 
Dont be scared about puting new engine in!! I am 16, had very little knoledge of land rovers etc! Had done a little work with my dad on his series 1! I droped myself in the deep end, by geting a 1952 80" i put the first 2.25 diesel in found it had dropped a valve (you learn to do compresion checks b4 u put engine in) but second time round new engine had it in in a day and running! went on to get an MOT! So it realy cant be that hard!! hope this encourges you to get your hands dirty!

Cheers guys still waiting to find out whats wrong with it but have now got meself a defender 90 200tdi for a good price and all the important bits are soild ,so now if the oldy needs a new engine i can set about it and take my time and hopefully enjoy putting a lump in it .

as been said, the old series is so simple that almost anyone can do most jobs on it. changing major sub assemblies such as injuns is easy. landys are very basic. very agricultural. if a farmer can fix em, anyone can.
get a mate to help, and get friendly with local landy/series owners.
join a club?
most landy owners are only to glad to help out others, and esp newbies.

start buying some hammers, and collecting an assortment of steel bars, now.
 
Got a 12 lb sledge hammer so i guess if it all goes t*ts up i can bash the sh*t out of it!!!!(only joking its to good to scrap).Got a mate who has a field and is an ex farmer who says he will help and can get use of a tractor to lift out and replace ,so that should make it a bit easier,just need to find a replacement half decent diesel engine in buckinghamshire area and test how well my new toy is at towing.
 
He could shove in a set of big end shells easy enough .... if the shaft wasn't ripped to bits it would probably do fine for yonks.

It's not as if it's a big job.
