Wasn't me, did it on a lane North of Richmond, I didn't fall too far because my ABS saved me (Arse Braking System), just far enough to break the leg .
Honestly I don't think the problem is going to be your EGR valve, if you disconnect the MAF & your performance comes back then it can't be the EGR since that isn't related to the MAF. I think I am right in saying that when you disconnect the MAF the EMS senses this & switches to an open loop fuel schedule which is set by throttle position & engine speed. Not only does it ignore the MAF signal but it also ignores the MAP signal (Manifold Absolute Pressure) so it could be it's your MAP sensor that is full of crud, makes sense if your freebie had been kicking out black smoke because of a blocked crancase breather. It isn't too difficult to take it out & clean it with WD40, might just need a new gasket when you put it back though, I used to have some pics of where it is located I will see if I can dig them out.

A couple of pics showing MAP sensor location, only one bolt locating it, it's at the left hand side of inlet manifold looking from front of car,

Thanks so much for kind advice. Going to clean the egr and map sensor this weekend....Iv also emailed ron at rover ron (diesel-tuning web site) re the maf I put in.....got an immediate reply and says it will def not work without the mafam/synergyll so I have purchased this today (£185 OOOUCH!!) and hopefully will arrive by saturday...so a weekend of being under the bonnet...for my fella!! I tied to save by buying the maff on both time and money it has ended up costing me £50 more and the pierburg maf I have, is not the one that rover ron sell, and it may end up using MORE fuel!!! Will post hopefully a FINAL reply next week when completed all cleaning up and fitting new synergy.....hopefully it will be positive, will regain power perhaps a little extra...which will def come in useful for my high speed get away from robbing the bank!!!
Thanks again!!

You won't regret buying a synergy 2, just put one on mine with a pierburgh maf.

The difference is amazing once you sort the settings out to suit your needs.
Should take about 20 - 30 minutes to fit and away you go.

good luck

Synergy should arrive saturday...ron said put on setting 6 general setting. Wat is your pierburg part no. please.....did you buy from rover ron also.... both parts together??
