Hello folks, I picked up a 2002 disco 2 Serengeti last week. The power steering pump is leaking at the joint between the two halves of the pump body. I've bought a recon pump, and need to know if there is anything else I need to complete the job (gaskets maybe). Thanks.

Use the correct Land Rover PAS fluid. It's a greenish colour and a bit pricey.

Hi, If you've got the complete pump then no more gaskets are required. Did mine a few months ago and hardest part was getting it to mesh with the water pump drive behind it. You'll need to take the fan off too to make access easier.

Thanks guys, the bloke I bought it from was putting dex III in. I suppose I'll have to try and get it all out.

dexron wont hurt the system ,it will run on it as good as any other oil, its the same pump and box type as fitted to earlier models and defender that do use dexron

I spent this afternoon fitting the pump, no issues fitting it but now steeering is really heavy. I bled the system by lifting the front end and moving the wheel from lock to lock until there's no more bubbles. then I tried using the bleed screw on the steering box, with the screw open the fluid in the resevoir rises to the point of overflowing which I could stop by closing the screw and the fluid would return to its previous level. have I bought a faulty pump?

Well, I've answered my own question. It's duff, there was no circulation in the reservoir, it just wasn't pumping the fluid at all. So I've swapped it for the old leaky one, which bled itself almost. So weekend wasted and the headache of trying to get a refund to follow.

Yep, the LR recommended cold climate fluid is a tad pricey, especially if you get it from the main stealer.
You can get it on the bay at a significantly ower price. Search on the part number: STC50519
