Looking into buying a Land Rover but it seems a bit of a minefield! How important is it to have a VIN on the chassis? If a chassis is galvanised will it loose its VIN? I understand that if you replace the chassis and show evidence the old one was destroyed it is ok, but what about if the original chassis looses its VIN during repairing. Also, looking at the rules surrounding radically altered vehicles, would a series 3 built before the rules came in (1998) be exempt? Thanks.

Chassis number missing on galv chassis is normal. You should have a metal plate with vin number on it.
Next ask if they have a receipt for the new chassis & any build photos.

if your going to be looking at a series 3 on coils it’s probally a cloned/stolen 90.

There are photos but no receipt because it was the original chassis repaired and galvanised. Seems all very original but I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I’ll get an expert out.

And check everything on the V5 matches and that the vin number says it's what your looking at...

If they reckon its the original chassis repaired, ask to see what bits they did you should see weld marks, and where they replaced the front dumb iron if they say that's why there's no number stamped on it.

So if the dumb iron is not replaced the number on the chassis should still be there? Could shot blasting and galvanising actually get rid of the stamp which is deeply stamped into the chassis?

if the VIN matches the plate with VIN (engine bay?) but the chassis doesn’t have one is it still alright?

The vin plate thats pop rivited to the body means it matches the logbook...
However the vin number indicates the year, type and fuel it left factory with...that is what I meant...If the chassis has no number you need to dig deeper

:)
+1 - which is why this forum is the place to ask such questions :)

I understand the designa chassis wouldn’t be the original. The problem is the seller claims it is original chassis without VIN, but it has coils... I am confident enough engine is original though so really unsure what to think about it at the moment. I’ll dig deeper... :)

Good job your not looking at a series 2. Some of them didn’t have the number on the chassis from new

I wouldn’t think for one moment it was built with coils. If it was the young farmer would have had 90 panels on it in a thrice to lure young milkmaids with his modern wheels. ;)

Yes you're going to have to post a load of pictures and let us see what you're talking about. The series number should be towards the front of the dumb iron , the defender one is slightly further back more hidden by the tyre.
Also pics of the interior, suspension and bodywork.
