Hi all,
Looking at buying first LandRover, Defender 90 for throwing mountain bikes in and clay pigeon shooting, just keep local, nothing too serious.

But to say I am confused with widely different pricing is understatement, OK to do bit of work, OK with welding and built kart engines for years so fairly comfortable around spanners.

Want to spend up to £7k but curious as don't want to waste time driving around and looking at lipstick on a pig vehicles.
 
Have you thought about a TD5 Disco a lot more room and nice to drive and less of a chance of being stolen and with that budget you would get a lot of truck.
 
Have you had a play with a 90? once you start loading them up , there is not a lot of space in the back.

My lad has a 110 county and he can't get 2 mountain bikes in without taking wheels off them first. It's surprisingly awkward getting stuff through the back door.

I completely get what you mean about wanting a 90... They're iconic and even though it may not make the most sense, the fact is you want one.
So take a look at something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/193444248745
It's a 200tdi (in my opinion you'd be better off with a 300tdi but both are fantastic and simple engines) which you can fix roadside with Halfords' advanced 200piece tool box. Seriously grab one if you don't have one: https://www.halfords.com/tools/hand...pc-socket-and-ratchet-spanner-set-735757.html it's an investment on a load of tools you probably already have but it's super compact and easy to use roadside.
Back to the 90...
Ask to see pictures of the underside (just exchange numbers and use WhatsApp before going to see it to save yourself some time. THEY WILL ALL HAVE ROT!! Somewhere, they will. For £7K you'll be buying a little bit of rust with your new toy. Look for it in at least these place:
Rear cross member front and back
Rear outriggers both sides of the chassis rails especially if it has rock sliders
All of the body mounts, look at the condition of the body wherever it's bolted to steel too as the aluminium corrodes (LR didn't use jointing compounds everywhere I'm afraid)
Around the cross members where they bolt to the chassis especially the one under the transmission
GB and engine mounts obvs
Front outriggers, these are a fun one that just love a good rust check them twice from all angles
The sills
The bottoms of all the doors
The bulkhead - start and finish the inspection on this one, inside and out, under the carpet, behind the sound deadening (if fitted), where the windscreen joins, around the vents, around the hinge mounts... Just check it thoroughly

I have a 110 hardtop and can easily fit bikes in the back. The back of a station wagon is about the same size as a 90 unless you fold/remove the record row seats.
