Hello everybody!

I'm a newbie to this site and I'm also a LR wannabe. I have a very serious problem...

Married, father of 2, currently drive a F/Focus but cannot squeeze fishing tackle, wife, 2 kids, kid's stuff and my parents (who visit regularly) all into the Focus.
I have £x to get a new (to us) vehicle.
My problem is two-fold;

I am under strict orders to buy a 2nd-hand F/Galaxy
(The Galaxy has much to recommend it - it's a 2004(?) Ghia, lots of bells and whistles (some useful), quite economic on fuel, belongs to a friend and we've borrowed it on several occasions, right price, quite a bargain, family like it)
BUT I WANT a LR!
(Found one same price - 1999 300tdi County Saloon 12-seater, fully refurbished)

The Galaxy is newer, more 'modern' in feel and appearance, has more family appeal and is probably more economical and more comfortable but it has no soul!

How can I convince my wife that the LR is the vehicle we really should have (and quickly before it's sold)?

I'm not terribly vehicle-minded, my wife understands more about the mechanics of them than I do. My reasons for wanting the LR are purely 'of the heart' - my wife understands this (she used to ride bikes) but I need solid arguments to persuade her - reliability, maintenance costs, fuel consumption, etc as well.

Any thoughts? Facts/figures? Persuasive arguments?

Give in gracefully. You are on a loser, mate - anything that goes wrong will be an "I told you so". Get the Galaxy, take the moral high ground and say "Next time - its a landy";)

oh - and check the main floor from underneath - they are known for rotting ;).
 
GET THE LANDY - then you can come out with us fellow cornishmen and get mucky, and we'll help yer fixin it when it goes pete tong - don't ask us fer help in fixin yer galaxy though!!!

Better still, don't check the main floor, then if it proves to be rotten you can blame her, and get your chioce next time.

As MHM says do not buy a Defender against her wishes, unfortunately they are not always the most reliable and any little thing she will hold against you, you must try and win her round. .

She understands why I want the Landy but she's making her decision with her head - some people might say that's not unreasonable.
Me? If I can't have the Landy then I'm not really bothered what it is... so might as well go with the Galaxy.

(How long do you think it would take me to spray my way thro' the main floor with a saline solution? Too long... Landy will be gone and so will the cash!) :D
 
seeing as the Fix Or Repair Daily thing is such a good deal tell her you'll be spending the money saved on a landy - and get yourself a nice tidy 90 or 110

please note the use of the word TELL - don't ask her TELL her

Ah, the two car solution! Would be good but there's only one lot of cash! :(

you need to take charge of yer household, sounds like you've spent way too long under a thumb and have had all the fight beaten out of you

if you want a landy buy one

Trouble is technically/logically she's right! And I would feel guilty if I bought the Landy and something went wrong.

Wish I could use the argument that the Landy is a one-off, lifetime purchase that will still be running decades after the FG has crumbled to dust...

or....

.... the Landy is more than a mode of transport; it's a hobby which will give me an interest in my waning years

Whats Bad:
You have to open the doors to turn the GL's front seats right round.

Lots of quality problems.

On early models, water can enter car via ventilation, soak the underfloor and get into the ECU which controls the electric windows and alarm system. (On later models, this ECU has been moved.)

Aircon vulnerable to front end shunts. (Also shifted in later models.)

TDIs can blow turbos and catalytic converters.

Pre 1999MY key-lock immobiliser models suffer same security design fault as Passats, A4s and early Golf Mk IVs. Thieves can pop out the lock barrel then use the same screwdriver to turn lock so all the windows open and alarm sensors are disabled.

On early Galaxy 2000MY the two rear seats are very difficult to put upright and to remove. The padding was increased in the foam for 2000 models, made them harder to tumble over (or impossible).

Came last in 'P' reg J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey, but by 'R' reg had improved. Only 82% breakdown free in 2003 Which survey.

1995-1997 poor for breakdowns, problems and faults; 1998-2000 average for breakdowns, poor for problems and faults; 2001-2003 average for problems, poor for breakdowns and faults in 2003 Which survey. 9th from bottom out of 137 models in 2003 Top Gear survey.

2004 Which? quote: "Happier in the local garage than on the open road, the Galaxy can cost you an arm and a leg to run. Lacks loading and storage space, too." Can also suffer ABS failures. Engine mounting bolts of 2.3 litre petrol engines are prone to shearing after 5 - 6 years.

I was after a 7 seater and my wife wanted a Galaxy, she's now driving a Disco 2, and I got a Defender........get some backbone man!!!!

O yeah I do get shedloads of grief if something goes wrong, but women always find something to moan about better it's the car than, you haven't done the DIY/Garden/Rubbish etc etc

if yer want a landy invent stuff to suit yer argument.. ie galaxy's have had 25 recalls mainly for the braking system...87.56% of all landies built are still on the road( it used to be 95% but then they brought out the gaylander)....its a newer vehicle so will have a shed load more expensive electronics which cost two arms and two legs to fix, yer landy is cheap and easy to repair..... in winter when the whole of britain comes to a standstill because of 0.5° of frost you'll still be mobile.... you're the bread winner (you are int yer?) so you say want yer spending yer bread on ... more people have landies than minibuses so yer get more help and advice from fellow users....use wimin logic on her "its either me or the galaxy! yer can't have both"
cos there were more landies built second hand parts are more available...
ave just finished me cider so yule have to think up the rest fer yerself while i go get another one

Fix Or Repair Daily -Galaxy- Good vehicle :(
Comfortable
Reliable
Good MPG
All steel so rot quickly under the carpets
Expensive to fix when the engine fails as you need to find out what the fault code means and the FORD stealer changes 10 parts to fix it (and charge you accordingly)
Goes fast on the roads but you wouldn't want to take it down the really muddy track to that remote fishing site.
Can't teach the kids how to fix anything on them.
Have to wash anything before you put it into the car in case the smell invades the confort of driving such a boring thing.
Aircon costs a fortune to run.
Definitely not a cool car to be seen in, and even less cool when it breaks down with a fault code of 666 and no-one knows what it means.
Run out of room for all the stuff? Tough or leave one of the kids behind.
Still a pile of sheete at the end of the day and not very eco-friendly, be recycled in less that 6 years time.


Defender 110 - Damn good vehicle :D
Not entirely comfortable but the kids will love it when you drive through deep puddles and the water covers the entire vehicle and then leaks like a sieve
Cheap to fix as all the faults are known on this site (except the squeak from underneath)
Easy to fix and something to teach the kids how to use their hands to repair things.
Go anywhere but not very fast, but will get you to that remote fishing site (you know the one where you can't get mobile reception so can't hear the other half shouting at you for buying a Landy)
Runs on Veg oil at 95ppl or waste veg oil for free.
Can seat 12,as long as they are all slim and like being cosy with each other.
Can go green laning and meet up with lots of LoonyZone members and get muddy with them (and take the kids out of mums hair for brownie points at the same time)
Can fit all the fishing gear and it won't change the background smell (hum) of the Landy at all.
Every trip is an experience (most of them are even fun!)
Very enviromentally friendly, still be on the road 10+ years time.
You'll never have to buy another car, you'll just have to repair it a fair bit.
Free aircon. Open the vents in the front and the windows in the boot for that cabriolet feel.
Run out of room? You're carry too much cr*p, but no matter. Throw it on the roof and strap it down. Who cares about the paintwork.
Scare everyone else on the road, except other Landy drivers and trucks!
Cool to be seen driving one, not so cool when you are stuck at the side of the road with a broken prop shaft, but don't worry another Landy driver will be along soon ans stop to help. (Bit like bike riders)
Want to go out motorcrossing for the day? Stick the dirt bike on the tow bar rack and go.
Love mine and so does the family.

Ditch the bitch!
Get the Landy.

Result - one very happy chappy.
