Hi Guys,
Just signed up to this great Forum !.
I am a bit of a mug! Bought a Defender 90 ( 1997) looked good and drove ok so didnt bother to get it checked over!
Fast forward a week and the starter motor packed in whilst driving through London ( 300miles from home)
AA fitted a new one at a local garage. Started it up a couple of weeks later and notice a whiring sound whilst driving. Stopped at a local garage guy said you are lucky a few more miles and it would have caught fire!
Starter had not disengaged and stripped teeth off flywheel, sure youve heard this one before !!!
Been told that you have to make change to the electrics when fitting a new starter to a1997 model ?
Any comments ( apart from being a fool)
Peter

Assuming its a 300 TDI? basically a 300 starter is a 300 starter, there isn't different versions and no need to change any wiring if it is the correct one. Prices/quality varies so AA probably fitted cheap one hence the gear sticking in the ring gear. If ring gear has been damaged then that is either engine or gearbox out to get the flywheel out. If you go that far then change clutch at the same time and rear crank seal if it is leaking, saves doing it all again in a few years time

Depending on what the garage has found, if it is the incorrect part or poor workmanship that has caused he subsequent failure then there may be some recourse to the AA. However as said above a 300 starter is a 300 starter and should just be a straight swap with no other alterations needed.

Hi
It’s a 2.5 litre diesel

OK, it's a 2.5 litre doozil, but there again, so is the 2.5 normally aspirated, the 200 Turbo Doozil and the 300 Turbo Doozil.
Can you give us a bit more to go on apart from the engine size?
The details should be on your log book, or if you don't have that, lift the bonnet and have a look underneath, because if you have a big plastikky thing on top of the injun, it might be that those clever lads at Solihull left a reminder on there to let them know which lump they put in ;);)
