Hi everyone, My names is Matt I am a technician at a Land Rover dealership. Always read these forums but have never posted so I thought I'd give it a go. I own a Discovery 2 2002 TD5 that I bought as trade in from my dealership.

I've converted my D2 air suspension to coil springs. I have removed the suspension compressor and height sensors, also pulled the relay and the fuse from under the bonnet. When telling the ECU to disable SLABS, the vehicle will crank but wont start, when enabling SLABS again, I get the air suspension warning lamp on the dash but the vehicle will fire up straight away like normal. Any ideas?
 
Hi Matt, Welcome from a fellow new(ish)bie.. I assume from your post that you're a fellow main-dealer dweller such as myself. Unfortsunely a lot of people assume we work on older vehicles every day whereas I can safely say I very rarely see anything older than an 2008 vehicle in! I wish I could be of assistance but I've not heard of this problem either. There are some really helpful members here so I hope you find the answer you're looking for!

Thank you for the welcome, you hit the nail on the head there! Oldest vehicles I service and repair on a daily basis are the Freelander 2's.

Anyway, if it starts with the warning light on, but you have removed the system, why not simply remove the light from the dash and reenable the slabs so you can drive it? It's a bodge, sure, but at least it'll pass an MOT and you can drive it until someone tells you a better solution.
Old skool, but that's me. too old to know much about electronix!
@sierrafery is probably your man to help fix this.

No worries dude, thank you for the suggestion and the welcome. I love any and all land rovers including my own Discovery 2 but unfortunately, working in a main dealer, the older stuff just isnt relevant to them anymore, they've moved on, and it's sad but people dont want to pay nearly £200 an hour to have their 10/20 year old vehicles serviced and maintained

Just as a by the by, I would pay £200 an hour on my 19yr old vehicle. However, JLR have no idea how to deal with her. Which is why I go to a specialist, who not only knows how to work on my 19yr old vehicle, but also know how to work on everything from Series I, to just out of warranty Range Rovers. Which is what Land Rover has lost the ability to do.
Although they are not the only marque with the issue. Jaguar has been ruined in the same way by JLR. Volvo are the same. Funnily enough they usually sit in the same stealership. Mercedes is a different kettle of fish, their dealers are more than happy to help with old/er vehicles. As are J**p, and the BMW dealers I have dealt with.
In short we're not staying away because of the £200ph. We stay away because of lack of ability and knowledge ;)

Yeah I hear you man, I've worked as a tech for land rover for 3 years now and the only way I can learn about the older stuff now like the series and all the rest of it, is for me to strip it apart, we've still got all the workshop manuals and special tools, we just dont see that stuff anymore. :)

Perhaps the stealers should sell off their manuals and tools, to those who have the knowledge, experience, and willingness to use them. They're of no use without the experience ;)

Fu k, I only charge 35€ for the older buggers.... I'm doing something wrong somewhere:eek:
