Def west ender

New Member
Hi Guys, newbie here. Read a few posts and thought I'd join and ask a question, sorry if posted in wrong section.

I'm looking at a 4.6 Defender, it has a single point Iwema LPG system that was running on it, but was disconnected when the new engine was fitted.

Will it run ok with just a single point system on it if set up correctly? And if so is there a good garage near/or not too far away from West London that can refit/set up the LPG? I don't really have the money to fork out for a Multipoint system.

The Defender has:
4 branch manifolds
no cats
K&n type filter

Big thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Firstly, I don't know the ins and outs of the 4.6 defender engine, but have a fair amount of experience with LPG. Single point LPG is usually recognisable by an alloy ring between the airbox (assuming it's a fuel injected motor) and the air intake hose. There will be a approx 25mm o/d hose fitted to the ring, which leads to the vapouriser. The vapouriser has a mixture screw on it, much like a carb.
If you're a fairly competent person, I would advise filling the LPG tank, start and warm up the beast, then switch over and see what happens. If it runs lumpy, tweak the mixture screw (possibly to within 1/8 turn) It will be a fair bit of trial and error, and it will stall many times before you get it right.
If you aren't confident with it, find somewhere to re-commission the system, it shouldn't cost too much. Don't be tempted to give in to sales patter about multipoint systems, the single point system is adequate.

Enjoy...

Rather than wreck the new engine with an LPG system that is inadequate, why not save up for a decent sequential front end kit that can fuel the engine properly.BTW as its a 4.6,what EFI system has it got, does it run a distributor etc ?
Any 94mm bore Rover V8 will suffer badly if run lean or allowed to overheat - if its a new one then you need to help it from the start,a multipoint system will allow the engine correct fuelling, esp if its run closed loop with oxygen sensors.
