Hi all. Just joined up to start reading about the Defenders. I'm thinking about going for a Defender 90 at some point but I will have to read up on them first. I'm not knowledgeable with cars let alone Defenders!

I come from the mindset that I just like the idea of having one, therefore I will get one. Crazy and unjustifiable to get one but I don't really mind what others think. And I live in a town :)

Maybe its my farm boy youth that is looking for some revival. Maybe I can look into this green-laning that i see mentioned around the place.

Anyway - hello to all and be kind to the newbies who no nothing about motors in general :)
 
I guess i would realistically be looking from 2000-5000. I want to be able to get something reasonable that will not require a complete overhaul I guess. I drive a crappy little Fiesta at the moment and would not mind replacing that before winter kicks in.
 
Oh and that fact that I know nothing about motors would mean I must get something that wont require a lot of work. But I would be willing to learn and get my hands dirty as a learner and build my knowledge etc etc
 
Should be able to pick up a good 'un for that. I'm not sure on the prices on TD5's but you'll get a cracking Tdi for that money. Buying one's same as a regular car; watch out for a smokey engine, transmission noises, clunks, etc.

Look for a solid chassis and bulkhead. In your price range you could get one were they've been replaced. Save you the hassle of you intend on keeping it a while.

Unless you want a v8:D, the 200's the easier to repair, the 300 has a bit of electronic gubbins to contend with and the TD5 needs a computer! Same as any car of the same age.

The advice you'll get mostly is to look at a lot of 'em before buying. Good luck.
 
Indeed the question that lingers in my head is whether to bother looking at car dealers. With the lower end price range I would be hard pressed to find anything with land rover dealers I guess. Best a question for the boards and/or a little read up on the plethora of information here.
 
Have a look in land rover mags you will get an idea of how much things cost and what sort of things are out there.

Like others have said as long as you look at a lot of different ones and fish out the good from the bad you shouldn't go wrong, i brought a Disco 3 days after deciding i wanted one, i don't think buying on a whim is a bad thing at all, i don't regret doing it, i wish i'd done it sooner.
