Need some advise please if just about got my freelander td4 back on the road starts and idles fine drive fine pulls though the gears fine but once I stop I get what looks like a white grey smoke for between 5-10 seconds don't get none on starting or idling please hope someone can help

Noticed any drop in coolant level ?
White smoke normally sign of head gasket trouble.
On one of my cars you could smell exhaust gasses from the coolant reservoir.
Hope obviously thats not the case.
 
It's a bit early yet, you'll have to wait for the knowledgeable great ones to awaken lol.
Has been known that you can buy duff diesel from garages, especially super market's.
I'd go somewhere different and put a couple of gallons of shell v power or BP ultimate in before getting the hammers out !
 
Very strange, haven't a clue to be honest, have you driven it far ? Takes at least ten miles to properly get to running temp more in your weather.
 
If your just spinning her round the block it will never warm up properly.
If she's legal I'd say she needs a good run.
Lot's of condensation etc sits in exhaust system. Won't hurt to try, plus it's cheaper than going to garage etc.
 
Excess smoke checklist:
1. Oil level dropping?
2. Coolant?
3. What’s your MPG?

One difference between starting/idling and driving is boost, so I’d start by changing the crankcase breather filter.

EGR system worth a check/clean while you’re at it.

Unplug MAF, drive, see if problem goes away.

Clean the MAP.

Oil and coolant fine
Mpg unknown due to being off the road

Egr deleted
Crank case mod ordered
Was thinking maf or just needs good run
 
was wondering if it had something to do with the crankcase ventilation system
i.e. gearing down .. foot off go-pedal ..
would create a relative vacuum in the manifold ..

just a morning coffee time theory :)

might be worth draining the fuel sedimenter
just to ensure there's no water in the fuel
( over time .. water in fuel .. will cause problems in the fuel system )

If you'v only done short trips, then couldn't it just be steaming from the exhaust. It's very common if it's cold outside for the water vapour in the exhaust gas to condense to steam.
 
Also if it is a later td4 as I can not remember on the earlier ones you have a water trap go to the back rear wheel arch drivers side in uk and at the front at the bottom there is a hole and in it you will see the screw plug undo it and any water will come out.

all this ended up being was where i had cleaned the inlet all the crudd that i had loosened up falling though after a drive it cleared thanks for the help guys
