Hi Everyone!
Firstly hello! Newbie Disco Owner here! Finally bought the car I have wanted since my Dad test drove a Disco 13 years ago!

Just got myself a beautiful 1995 Disco ES V8i automatic! Drove it from Northants to Cheshire last week and the viscous fan went! Unforunately could only get it dropped at a garage so a lot of money later have a new fan, water pump, and no radiator cowling (apparently this was what caused problem- fan was rubbing on it and the bearings went! Thats one less job for me anyway!)

It does have ... Some issues! The outer sills are on their way out, holes in rear arches, boot floor was replaced but hasnt been done very well and now needs a complete new rear floor including side bits. Outer rear wheel arch on drivers side- gone! Inside quarter panel on passenger side has a huge, sorry I meant HUGE hole under seat belt mount extending to the boot floor and wheel arch, front fender arches have seperated themselves from the plastic cowling, passenger shock cone is rusted, suspicious crumbly rust spot on said chassis rail inbetween shock mount and windscreen! Oh and 2 slow(-ly worsening) punctures on front passenger and rear drivers tyre!

Seems I have my work cut out! Any donar parts would be appreciated and if anybody has a mig welder I can borrow (£156 a week from HSS or £140 to buy one?!?!?!) that would be a help!

Here are some pics anyway!

since you have alot of welding to do, id say get your self along to machaine mart or similar and get your self a descent gas/gasless mig. it will pay for itself in no time. dont use there small bottles tho get yourself a pub style c02 bottle. i take you have not welded before so heres a good site to get you started

Hi Andy,
That would be the ideal but with so much work to do money is at a premium! Trying to save up for a decent set but with MOT fast approaching and being my only car its gunna be tight! I did some welding at uni but never used a mig before and funnily enough I was just on this website after a google search! Seems reaaly helpful will defo be reading this and taking notes!

I know I need the alluminium, wire? For the body, can you still use weld through primer with a MIG?

you will find must bits that you have mentioned will need mild steel welding wire.my disco as been similar repairs and ive never touched alluminium yet. put up your location as someone might live close by and maybe able to help you for some beer tokerns.
ive you do buy a mig idealy you need upto a 150amp for chassie repair but low enough for body work. when ive done work i just use grinder to clean up to fresh metal weld then red oxide and seam sealer. finsh off with underseal

I'm in the process of redoing my sills after one of the body mounts came adrift. I picked up a Clarke Supermig 150 second hand off here and it seems able to do what I need. Worth looking around. I find welding with gas more tolerant of my feeble attempts!

Not sure what you will need aluminium wire. Most of the panels you'll need to touch are steel - that's why you have to weld them!

Durr I didn't think of that of course it would be the steel that rots!
