Impact wrench worked a treat on the stuck brake calipers bolts. Did them back up till I have some energy.

Attempted to undo wheel nuts with extended bar.

Pulled back, or ruptured kidney if I was being dramatic

Hurts to cough, sneeze & sit & hayfever sneezes are agony.

Why didn't I use impact wrench =.=
I’ve no experience of impact wrenched. Give it time

Mr muscle oven cleaner is the choice of VAG boys to clean turbo vains and manifolds...
Well I’ve managed to get a whole can in the manifold, slowly spraying it into all of its grubby orifices. There is so much gunk in there. Really hopes it shifts it in one.

I used two ,used one left it in for a while then jet washed it out then used another and left it over night then jet washed it out , then for good measure i washed it out with truck wash . What i would also do is buy a stiff bottle/baby brush and give the manifold a good brushing leave it for a while then jet wash it out

Sometimes 2 or 3 applications are needed. I use Kerosene as I have a ready supply to hand and it really does get the job done with just an overnight soak. I then dry the manifold with petrol or brake cleaner, both work perfectly for cleaning off the kero and drying the surfaces.

Right, hmm! It really is full of gunk. Been contemplating putting it in the dishwasher (Mrs.N said NOOO)
Might get down to town in the morning on a solvent and brush quest, thank you so much for helping.

Oh! Not too sure what kerosene is? Is it Paraffin in the UK.
Sounds good though. Thank you!

google is yo frend....

Kerosene is an oil, often called paraffin oil or heating oil that is used to power and fuel both industrial / commercial engines and machinery as well as powering domestic heating systems. Kerosene Oil is the UK's most common form of fuel oil for properties reliant on oil for heating their homes.

Brush wise I used an old alloy wheel brush and just straightened the wire out ended up about 40cm long and just the right diameter for the manifold.

So it sounds like everyone has been down this street but also getting through it.
Where does the gunk from?
Does it spew back from the piston arena?
It cannot be be coming from the air suckie inny part.

I'm dying to know the reference but I couldn't even manage those things.

Can't grow a beard & no socks is a deal breaker for me:D

Also apologies for post in wrong section. Was meant for "what have u done to your landrover today"

The black goop is partially burned oil, which originates from the turbo as a fine oil mist. The hot exhaust gas from the EGR valve then partially burns the oil mist, turning it into that thick goop.

Welcome to the club mate. I'm a total novice at car mechanics but defo gonna tackle some of the needed jobs myself. Tools are my only downfall. Not sure my wife is so excited as myself about my new found love for car maintenance.

Oops, I take it nobody ever showed you how to loosen a wheel nut. You NEVER pull the wrench up when you can point it the other direction and push it down with your foot.

Nice service kit you got. Just be careful what videos you watch for advice and don't be watching Bodgit and Leggit. When changing the fuel filter you need to loosen a couple of bolts from below but then pull the plastic wheel arch back and access it from the side. Working from below is a nightmare.

Good luck with it all.

Omg funny you should say that. I got new rear brake hubs/shoes etc thinking it would be doable.

After watching that bodgit leggit video of him replacing shoes I never even want to attempt it. Is jt really that much of am ordeal? I've still got ptsd from the video.

Not to slate the man or his channel I'm sure he does good work but it's put me off attempting altogether

The rear brakes on a Freelander is probably one of the easiest jobs you can do no the car!

Sometimes it can be a bit difficult getting the drum off if its worn down because the lip it creates gets stuck behind the shoes. Other than that the springs can be a faff to hook in and there's bleeding to do if you're changing the cylinders - but its all pretty simple.

Just take a pic of everything after you get the drum off so you know how it all goes back together.

Ah this gives me hope it's a job I need to get done quite soon.
The hubs have shed a layer of rusted metal so I shudder to think how bad the shoes are.

I park on a fairly steep hill with my wheel on almost full lock against the kerb but by morning it's evident it's rolled back a tad by the tyre being squished almost flat against the kerb & as I leave it in gear for extra hold it almost wedges itself in. Can't be doing gearbox much good

I may put it off & get new back plates first. Those are rotted too.

Thanks for tips! appreciated it

i put parts in the dishwasher when the missus is at work, and bake paint in the oven. Just gotta make sure its finished by the time she comes home.

I did wonder about a second hand dishwasher and hooking it up to a gravity fed tank of paraffin instead of water...... might blow up or something though
