Hi new to this first day been looking at other threads but nothing sounds like what I'm getting so some help would be appreciated.
Bought my freelander td4 about a month ago and has been running fine yesterday morning I started the Landy up and set off to work and noticed as the revs increased a sucking sound was evident coming from under the bonnet, it seems to do it until there is some heat in the engine then completely stops, and not notice it again till next morning I start it up again. I'm completely new to Diesel engines so not got a clue have had a squeeze of the pipes and they seem pretty solid so don't think it's cos there knackered any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

You've only mentioned a noise, any smoke, loss or low power? Are all your levels right? Doesn't sound nasty to me, but I drive an auto so the whistle from the turbo & whine from the gearbox drown everything else when cold! Been doing them for the last 20k+ miles! Great choice of Landy
 
Hi thanks love the car! And feel a little bit more reassured now after hearing a few other people say they like making noises mines an automatic too have noticed a little black smoke when it's at these higher revs but once engine is warm it completely goes not noticed loss of power some times when started on a morning it sounds as though it's idling a little low as has a chugging sound but then gets back up to normal, with the noise stopping when warm I was thinking could it just be a normal noise when it's cold like the turbo sucking more air in till it's up to temperature, the noise appears to be sucking close to the dashboard
 
Only time I had whistling was when I had busted hoses. Could be worth another feel around. Given that it stops once warm it may be the egr valve operation (or non operation )which is adding to the issue, thats assuming you still have it fitted.
 
does sound like a split intercooler hose, worth checking carefully, especially the long one across the front of the top of the engine, where it rubs on the mounting screw
 
Agree.

I had similar problem with mine. Turned out to be a split hose and a gunked up EGR valve. Only had around a pea sized hole in the gunk to let air through and the valve that is supposed to bring gasses in to recirculate was completely gunked & coked up.

You can remove & clean with oven cleaner (many people remove the inlet manifold if the valve is really gunked up to clean that) or you can buy a blanking kit.

The Autos are quite lumpy & revvy to drive in cold weather. Takes a while for the jatco box to warm up so they hold their revs to warm it up quicker. Could be you are just noticing it more now the weather is colder.

Stick with it, probably something & nothing.
 
Oh & a double dose of Millers in your diesel & a dose everytime you fill up. Makes year round running much better & makes the engine just that little sweeter. Mine went from being a bit of a bitch to start on very cold mornings to starting instantly.

Duh, it's too early. Forgot to mention cold mornings plus running of all ancillaries such as heaters, wipers, lights, heated seats if you have them all put a little extra strain on your engine, which may account for a slightly lumpy idle & the needle moving around a little bit at idle.
 
Thanks for advice will check the hoses again the only other noise I get when it's warm is when I put my foot right down I get a sound like the air blowers in the car are on full is this just the turbo kicking in cos when it's up to speed it stops,it only kicks in as I start accelerating then nothing. I know I sound like a right div but all these new sounds and smells just not sure if they should be there!

That sound isn't normal. All pointing to split turbo hose somewhere. Shouldn't be any smells either.

Silicon turbo pipe set recommended. Simple to fit, if a little time consuming for the o/s intercooler hose connection.
 
Cheers guys turns out it was a tiny hole in the 2 inch pipe after some sort of sensor in the turbo hose much appreciated for the help
