After a bit of advice im building a freelander 1 3 door for green laneing a pay and play day
Q1 after fitting a 2'lift kit I have been told the body looses rigidity so so you want flex in the body or rigidity been told fiiting front and rear strut braces make a big differance opinions please

Q2 anyone know of the ird strength bracket

Q3 anyone got a diy plans for a sump gaurd ,tank gaurd a d rear exhaust gaurd

Q4 is there roo in ithe engine bay to fit a second battery

Q5 anyone fitted a snorkal to the petrol as living in wales I am gonna come across water crossings

Q6 how are the discs brakes on the f1 or is it worth fitting f2 vented discs and psds

Q6 is there a roof bar available to fit the front of the wagon to fit driving lights

The workshop I have acces to has any type of tool for metal fabrication inc a pipe bender

I would be very surprised if a lift kit affects rigidity. Its just spacers between strut tops and the shell - nothing else changes.

2nd battery - depends on what engine you have. TD4 - not really. Others may vary.

Snorkel - pointless. If you are in water deep enough to need a snorkel, you have just killed the electronics.

roof bars tend to be too far back for lights - you will probably need to make something.


And just to be extra pessimistic - building a car specifically for green laning and pay n play days? I wouldnt even consider a Freelander - Too fragile, too temperamental, too complicated electronically, no lo-ratio, limited choice of accessories, ....I could go on and on. And thats coming from someone who likes Freelanders - they have their uses and do some things very well, but a pay n play toy is not one of those things.

Q6 - yes, i know right people

Q4 - no

Q3 - yes, but those are too pricey to show them in public ;)

Q1 - no, it will work fine , fron strut brace is a good idea, but a roll cage is better idea.

Q2 IRD bracket should be OK If a 1.8 petrol fit the strengthened bottom rail to stiffen engine...
Q3 sump guard. I scored mine from a scrap metal yard. 5 or 6mm aluminium is expensive. See what's available. My plan is to fit the plate I picked up into the original alloy frame. 6 bolts will hold it in place making servicing less of a chore.
Q4 2nd batt' in the 1.8 engine bay - not enough room.
Q5 there have been some discussed on her - look for SES88 or RealBeale I think. You can fabricate your own up. I fitted a CAF under the left guard - it could be easily extended up the LH A pillar. trawl my posts for pics of the CAF
Q6 disc mods poss' unnecessary - upgrade discs and pads are readily available. Changing the whole assembly would be complex.
 
The reason I`m building the freelander is it was given to me at a stupid price max cost will be about 800 quid all in (lift kit ,off road tyres winch with rope and upgrading the lights) that all come with it just need fitting, And if i enjoy it and the mrs also enjoys going off road I will then build a disco or defender next winter.
 
I give a sub £400 freelander less than an afternoon at a pay n play day before its completely buggered.
Assuming it has working 4x4 in the first place and doesnt get bogged down in the carpark:lol:

If you are getting it that cheaply, sell if for profit and buy something else. You will sink a fair bit of money into it with these mods and when (when, not if) it ****s its transmission you will loose the vast majority of your investment as the car will be worthless and the mods have a very limited market to re-sell them.

An old Discovery of even a Frontera SWB would be a much better idea.
