Ok, so I've wanted a proper 4x4 for a very long time - I am due to go look at at a 1993 3door 200tdi on Wednesday in Romford but I am a total novice with 4x4's and land rovers.

I have done a search but cannot find a 'what to look for' thead - can anyone help me with what I need to look for please, my biggest concern is it is only MOT'd until June.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated as I don't want to spend all my savings on something I've wanted for ages to find it then needs loads doing and I can't use it.

Cheers,

Lewis

itll be rotten thats for sure many hours with the welder your going to buy . check for rust everywhere , i mean everywhere .............

And the boot floor for rust, the inner wings for rust, the rear arches for rust, the rear crossmember for rust think thats about it?

Oh did i mention rust?

Apart from rust look for holes where there should have been rust, and before that steel.

It's usual to get 12 months MOT when selling a car to give the buyer confidence, I would insist on a fresh MOT or no deal

Ok, so you've all scared me silly but thanks - it's only got ticket until June but the guy says it's a solid vehicle it had no advsories on it's last MOT and to be honest if it is rotten it'll be staying there!

P.S. I can't weld - will that be a problem lol!

Think rust has been mentioned a bit but after you check for rust check again, bottoms of doors, anywhere where paint looks sprayed in, view everything with suspicion, as stated if it aint got a new MOT to sell for best price its not likely to get one without a big spend. Other things is if it aint rusty check for cambelt change history, if they dont know...walk plenty of other about. Happy hunting :D

"YOU CAN'T WELD" you soon will. But that's part of owning a Landrover. Doing all this stuff yourself. Keeping the thing on the road. Gives you a great sense of achievement and enjoyment. Then when you have sorted all the things needed to keep it on the road. You will want to take it apart and start to mod it. Once hooked that's it. It owns you then. :screaming_bug_eye_f:screaming_bug_eye_f

if its that solid anyone with a brain would mot it before selling it

You buy that car and you will have to learn how to weld chap.. Its not as daunting as it sounds.. I managed, and I was (am) well out of my comfort zone.
Try to get the engine tested for oil pressure. Low oil pressure has been my biggest head ache. Check all the gears engage ok. Is the power steering box ok.
They are good reliable cars, but they do need looking after and things need maintenance.
Check out what I had to go through. Mine was pretty bad, but it will give you some idea.. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f20/hello-cornwall-disco-project-165186.html

So I took the plunge and yes it does / will need some welding for its mot but my neighbour has offered to help me out and point me in the right direction. Drove it 100 miles towards home got 5 miles away and the brakes failed! I think a bit of poo came out as I drove up the path away from a stationary learner driver! Luckily no damage and stopped quickly as was only go 5 mph!

Any ideas what it might be?

What happened ?

Did the pedal go down slow or straight to the floor with a thump ?

Will it 'pump' back up or is it still down ?

Check the fluid level any noticeable leaks, as opposed to the usual drip drips?

Hey,

It just went slowly down with no stopping power but it pumped back up but again no stopping power! It sounds like you can hear air when you are pumping the peddle.

Any ideas?

I haven't checked them yet as I had to abandon it on the side of the road and get my other half to pick me up as needed to get to Shrewsbury ASAP last night. Going to have a look if not have it recovered on Saturday.
