Hey all,

I just picked myself up my first land rover. A 1993 200tdi.
It's pimped with terafirma 2" lift kit with dislocation cones. some hefty off road tyres 265wide.
Sump. Tank and diff guards. The near side front wing has a large dent and he two near side doors are completely wrong. Luckily it came with a few spares so that will be sorted when I get the time.

It's got a few issues, but it's got MOT until February and tax is end of July.
So it's given me a good base and time to prepare for the next MOT.

The first and main issue is that the steering damper is currently just attached to the steering bar. It has no bracket to attach the other end too... I can see on the chassis either side are what appear to be the brackets for a bar to go across but nothing there.

Does any body know what it's supposed to look like and are they easy enough to get hold of?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Ashley

welcome and have a look for the terrafirma steering damper and relocation kit my D1 200 tdi had it when i got it and the drive is real stable. I have driven my mates D1 200 tdi with standard damper with it in the standard position behind the axle on the drag link and his steering is really light but it wanders down the road and you need to correct the steering alot more than mine does

Thanks I've put it on my to do list.

We'll I took the truck into work and had a good look over it.
There's a fairly large list of things that need attention.

First of I think all but the near side front wheel bearings need doing.
There's welding both front foot wells. It looks like someone badly patched the passenger footwell, it's been welded here and there and the silicone across the rest of it.

The rear brakes are almost new apart from the near side inner pad is almost metal to metal. I didn't have time to check out the calliper but I'm sure it should be ok.

The wheels are in a desperate need of balancing! Frustratingly our wheel balancer doesn't have a bib enough adapter to balance them! Luckily though our tyre supplier said to pop over when I'm free and they'll do it for freeeee!

The handbrake doesn't do anything, diddly squit. Which brings me on to my next problem. To check the shoes I need to remove the rear prop. Has any one ever had a problem removing it? I removed all nuts and I couldn't get it to move. I even whacked it with a hammer, I mean I practically smashed it. I know it's supposed to slide up.

Has anyone been able to sort it out without cutting it off and changing it?

It needs a steering damper attaching ASAP, and I'll try and get the relocation kit.

There's plenty more to do but I'll get some pictures up as and when I get them done!

looks like you have some fun ahead of you. whats your location might be able to organise some 'tinkering' meets

Thanks yeah lots ahead that's just a small part of it!

We'll it wasn't a necessary upgrade and I've still got to do the wiring but I got a tow bar spruced it up and got it fitted this afternoon.
The amount of mud that was wedged in the bumper, made it feel like a ton lighter when it fell out!

I've had to cut the tank guard a bit to make it fit.

It's a bit rough but I will tidy It up when I get a bit more time.

I've got to tow the apprentices new fiesta to work. Just done the head gasket and wants to get it MOT'd.

Over the last week I started to hear a sort of metallic noise that slowly got worse, now I know that both the diffs are leaking and also the transfer box too but I didn't think they where that bad. I was worried one of them was running out of oil.
Any ways it got to the point where I needed to do something.

So I checked it out and it turns out the offside rear wheel bearing had collapsed and allowed the hub to rub against the axle.

I'll up load a few photos which show the extent of the lack of good grease and lots of dry clumpy grease mixed with water!

The brown lumps are what I'm guessing used to be nice yellow grease!

So I fitted a new hub seal, bearings, and half shaft seal. I got 2 satches of grease for each wheel bearing but I also used some extra grease from a big tub laying around to fill the end of the half shaft! Hopefully everything will stay nice and freshly lubed.

I got myself a box of bits collecting. I need to fit some new rear pads which I've got, I got myself a steering damper relocation kit the other 3 wheel bearings and also the front braided brake hoses. I also need to completely redo the metal/copper brake pipes throughout the whole braking system.

I have some pics for you that might help with you locating the steering damper

heres what a standard one should look like on the diff end

and on the steering arm end
