Hello

I am in the process of convincing my girlfriend, that a LARO is the best choise for us. But which one..... Guess I will be 25% off road, 75% on road, I like comfort but I am not a sucker for it. The choise is between Defender 90/110' or a Discovery 2, all used.
Is the Discovery any good in terrain, compared to the Defender? Will I get tired of using the Defender as an everyday car? Will all the electrical stuff in the Discovery give me trouble. What else to consider?

Future LARO owner from Denmark:D

IF its your only vehicle and need to realy on it everyday i would say NOT a landrover at all. but if you really want one, I would recomend the disco as its more of a every day car. I have got a def 90 and its great when it works lol. The defenders are very good off-road but if your doing mild off-road a discovery will be fine. It will get you through more than you think but i will tell you unless you are very lucky you usually break something off road and a disco 2 will be too nice to take off-road mud goes in places u would not think off. But i would recoment the disco as its more pratical as a every day car. the defenders are a weekend toy like a bike. I am only telling you my point of view but other people might dissagree?

You will spend as much time repairing a Defender as driving it. You have to really love them to put up with it. The Disco and Defner are almost equal off road. Take a look at some youtube videos and notice that it gets really extreme before the Defner starts to do things the Disco can't.
A lot of things make a difference off road. A Disco with good tyres will beat a Defner with road tyres.
On road a Defner rolls around and has a totally unacceptable ride. You can't fit three people in a 90 even if it has three seats in the front. There's nowhere to put your legs in the middle seat. If your girlfriend is going to drive it too she will probably appreciate the Disco a lot more. A Defner will also only do about 60mph. You can go faster but you just wouldn't because it's not good for it and they don't exactly stop well either.

Weighing up the pros and cons, get a Disco. They're a million times quieter.

If you love them, get a Defner. It's worth accepting every fault they have because they put a huge smile on your face and you will be part of a community (have a go in one and see how many people wave).

Just so you don't think I'm biassed, I have a 90.

I would say the opposite. Get a defender, I used yo own a TD5 Disco (2) but changed to a Defender TD5. there is no reason it should be unteliable as long as it's well looked after. My old disco did 26mpg average, defender does 34. I also commute for an hour each way to work (40 miles) and don't find it uncomfortable.

What's all this 60 mph business?

Well he's talking about an older defener. You always end up behind lorries and vans because you can't really overtake so it's just best to accept 60mph ish and stick to it. I'd also like to see someone do an emergency stop at 70/80. I'm sure it would turn out worse than at 60. Also if it's a commercial, like mine, the speed limit is 60.

Fair point, but any far will take longer to brake from 70+ than 60. I will accept that Defenders Are much quieter and smoother at 60, but there is no reason why if needed that they won't do 70+ all day. 200, 300 TD5 puma should all be capable of this.

Oh and the speed limit for a comercial is 60 not max.

I know mine will do 85/90 but the problem comes if you have to swerve. I know the speed limit for a commercial is 60 (it's at the bottom of my other post) but you won't get pulled up for doing 70.

I accept what you're saying so I'll change it to;
In a Defender you will usually find yourself doing 60 rather than 70 because it feels more comfortable and you can tuck in behind lorries.

Fair play, I see your point on the swerving. I edited my last post as I typed it incorrectly. The speed limit for a commercial is not 60 though.

I think it depends on the weight etc, but if I remember correctly, even the biggest van can do 70 on a motorway, although I might be wrong. I'm fairly sure a Defender isn't limited to 60 though.

I saw it on something like traffic cops to be honest. He pulled up a transit doing 80 and said what's the speed limit for your vehicle? The guy went 70 and he said no it's 60. So I'm not sure now. I think I'll do a search later on.

hi all

i had a speeding ticket for doing 70mph on a dual carrage way in my works van (vauxhall vivaro).

had a leaflet with the fine saying (for my commercial van)
the max limits for motorway 70mph
all other roads 60mph unless stated

but good news the photo was quite dark so i got off

cheers mark

Ive got a90 too and love it.Got to say I agree with khaos tho its no pleasure on the road. Its rare for women to enjoy a def,tho not unknown. If you want to manouevre a heavy trailer in a steep field you wouldnt want anything but def.Disco maybe more all round drive. Both have great off road capability standard tho adef might shade it in reaally tough stuff. If your serious either can be modded to scare most!:D
