Sorry, I am a total newb with Discos, and currently on the look out for a cheap one.
I have seen a few and done the usual checks.....

One I have seen am I am quite keen on is a 200TDi, generally in decant condition, just a few 'minor' issues to deal with.
The other is a late 2000 300TDi (again a few minor issues) which is double the price of the 200......

So I am kinda after merits of both really.

Are Discos steel bodies?

Cheers in advence, Nij

Get the 200 the money ul save ul need to spend on it and the 300 ul end up needin to spend money that as well.so spend the money U save it rather than extra and there part steel and part ally

Adam, thank you for your prompt reply and I am glad to see you have the same idea I had.
The 200 has a couole of minor issues as said, one of them being by the roof window, there is a small hole (smaller than a biro) easilly welded if its steel or could even use black silicone under the window rubber if its ally (I forgot the magnet).
The other issues are easy welding (and not a MOT failure IMO), needs a seatbelt clasp cover (yeah I am being picky) and a decant clean. It has a slight oil leak from the sump by the look of it.
The plus points with the 200 is it has a upgraded front bumper and a lift kit, has the all important 7 seats.

the roof is steel, the body panels are ally, the interior panels and floor are steel.

personally the 300tdi, but as above could be an early td5 if its 2000 or a late registered 300tdi

200 club, defo if you're looking to offroad heavily, it much more similar to defender simplicity, but the 300 is a better everyday car.

300 tdi much more refined & great for everyday use! - and yes get an early one without ABS and airbags (the more basic the better) :))

The v5 and vehicle check says it's a 2000 model but is deffo a 300!

Anyway, I have paid a deposit on a 200 as I want to off road properly in the future, plus the car is a great condition (compared to late 300's I have seen)

Well!

Get this:

Recently met up with Mark Saville from LRO for the shoot on my Disco.

Mark has a 300tdi disco, 3 door.

And it is a W reg.

I was like "mark, why is your 300 a W reg?"

He said he didn't know!

We checked the VIN plate and it was a WA vin, so defo a 2000 model vehicle!

As such, maybe there was some leftovers or some export vehicles that never made it out so they got sold off in 2000.

As such regards the 2000 model that the OP is referring to, in a similar fashion to a man in orthopedic shoes, I stand corrected :)

The 2000 300tdi had more rot than my 41 year old beetle which is having a full resto lol
